A FULL DESCRIPTION OF. THE BATTLE
dc.
It almost seems like a romance to be read
ing of Navel Battles on a river a thousand.
miles from the ocean, in:thii, heatt a"gteat
country, seatlnely yet ^reclaimed from itawil
dernees state. The battle ontbe_Teintiesstie
was one of the most brilliant affairs of the
age, and shows that on ihe rivers, as well as
the seas, Americaniniincible.
Ne cannot ,deny our readers a fall descrip

with unalloyed delight by. 'generations to

Fort Henry stands in an admirable post-'

densely - weeded island--Panther Island.
Just beyond is Panther Creek, . coming in
from the DLit. `..l.lere the river makes a bend.
to the west, and in the carve is nearly thane
fourths of a mile wide. From the bend to the
head of the 'island is a mile and a quarter.
Just above the
.bond there is another eredk,
which opens intoa.pond or bayonets the oast
ern side.. Thit land between these creeks
was seleetedforthe defence of the river. Tire
angles and facia - of the: fort .werp.constructed
so that the larger portions of the gni§ eirold
be brought tp bear upon the entire distance to
the island, and also down its eastern side,
which is the.mniu channel. -- The western side
is impassable a; tow water, but the rebels
taking into !Occottmhthe. possibility of an at

Commodore . ' Faotti knew they were there, and
not only that, but the exact locality in which
they were placed. lie sent out . his email
boats and fished up five, four of which were
found to beep damp that the powder would
have bad to be dried before exploding.
The fort was strong on both flanks, by
means of the *lke and the pond. - The
creeks extended along the main land and left
but a nar'rew ridge of land in the rear. This
was covered' by a dense forest, and here the
rebels bare need their axes to some advan

it., It contains tilniut four acres. Outeidd of
this there is an inSix.pched eamp—anembsik

five acres. ' .
At Pine Bluff landing is a ferry six miles
below the fret. The road from the ferry roue,
along the bank under the bluff fora short Ms
tanciy4then runs inland, crosses Panther creek
and joins t„he road 'leading to Dover, which
crosses at the bead of the pond.
Right opposite the pond, on the west Mao
of the river, there is a high bluff, which com
mands the fort and encampment. On this
bluff the rebels had erected a work, called a
redan in unlitary works; but they had not
erected guns within it. The front face of the.
fort was not more than twelve or fifteen, foot
above the armlets of the river at high water.
The rebels had tented barracks in their en

—to hold the place against us by water; and
by land. It was confidently expected that the
fort would knock big boles into the gunt:oatt

could pass the fort ; and if the place coati ise
held against the boats, there was no danger
of our opening their highways by a mere land
attack. Dist, as has beau seen, they counted
their chickens before they were hatched. With
this view of the locality, we may proceed to
the narratiVe of events.

quite as long at the earthworks. His inten

told his men that, one shot that was deliber

badly aimed. Ile did not want them to waste

that fortification, and till. that. was done ..he

, Flesh arid blood, could not stand against

Not &abet was fired after it was struck.. : The
rebel General, Tilghman, had flung .out a

have made no difference, for he' was. deter
