Some. of, the-developments of the* letters
are curious. The strength of the'Union

to Colonel Wood, under date of the 10thof

'The news of ronz. Ming back to Cum

by the presence' of ireens. -
It was, plainly:
visible that the Union - min 'Viers so glad
that they could hardly represa an open.ex

sumed an open character, and some eight
or ten of the bullies or leaders made an at.
tack en some of my men, near . the Lamar
House, and seriously wounded several:
• _ * * "The southerners here are con
siderably alarmed,: believing l that - there is
preconcerted plan'for united' movement
among ~ the Union men, - ,if by anymeans
. the enemy should get into Tennessee:'
--Again, Col.' Wood writes under date-of
November 1: ' ' '
- .

. • Prdo not believe , that the Unionists are

He said: n , - " "

leaders should be seized and held PriSoners.
The leniency shown them has been unavail

Colotiel Wood, however, finally: appealed.
to the central government at. Richmond.
; On the 11th of November he -wrote from
Knoxville to Adjutant General Cooper; .
"I feel it to be my duty to place this; city

They are finding: places of aafetylor their

And on . the 20th of November Wood
'Wrote thus to Bepjazoin, the rebel Secretary
ofWar : • • • -• •
I have been here at thilstitlimforthree

ernment. They will take she oath of elle.

They aro the followers and slaves of John
son and Maynard, and never intend to be
otherwise. When arrested they suddenly
become very submissive, and declare they
are for peace and not supporters of the Lin

men. At one time, while oar forces were
of Knoxville; they gave it out that a great
change had taken place in East Tennessee,
and that the people were becoming loyal.
At the withdrawal of the army from hero to
the Oap, and the first intimation of the 'p
pm& of the Lincoln army, they wore in
arms] and scarcely a man but was ready to
join it and make war upon us. The priso

assurance that the enemy was already in
the state, and would join them in a few nays.
I have ttrreqnest at least that the prisoners
