halting Railway. Tracks.
An'inUmting discussion has sprang up in
Philadelphia,relatire to the iujurysuppoaed
to malt from the salting of the passenger
ii'/ railwaytracks, for the purpose of melting the
: snow. . The Councils. were about to puss an
: ordinance prohibiting the use of salt for that
/>'• purpose, upon ihVallegationthaUt was detri
mental to health, and that the sait wator was
injurious- to shoe leather, carpets, etc. A
Committed was appointed to Investigate the ]
-entyeet, and several scientific gentlemen were 1
'* examined.' of the. University
: ,pf Priinsylvania, stated, that salt not being
-volatile, It* would -require ah Intense heat,
neatly beyond the heat of the mid-daysuo,
tovolatiLlie It.’ In preventlngthe decompo
' si torn of-vegetable andanimal matter, he
. that the salting of the streets was
calculated' to promote .the ■ BalubriPuiness of
the-atmosphere. 'lhecffeet of the salting
> uponthe aWosphere is to eool it; therefore to
it drier. It' is a popular arm to snp
peso that the mixture ofsaltand snow renders
thaatmosphere damper-; on the contrary, it
icndara U drier. - Because a great deal of fluid
matter shows itself inconsequence of the
mixture of salt and inow>_4t does not follow
' that there should be more moisture in the at*
T: - jnotphere. *:• An advantage in salting the
- . streets, the Professor said, U in tbe rapidity
with which it-removes'the snow. /Without I
' the salt, the snow melts in the day-time and !
. freest* at night; and in that way the streets
may be wet for weeks before tbe snow is re
moved. -After tllW salt'is applied to the snow
there is no free ring, and' the fluid soon runs
off. The fluid would be * few degrees colder
- to the fret of a person who had walked in it,
thaAiif there had not been any salt/hut it
would not, in his opinion, be, therefore, more
- illations to health. *
- . ; It is stated that 100,000 porsons per day
ride cathe railways In Philadelphia—or about
one-sixth of the entire population, so that if
V a snow fell, :a&d they were not permittad to
salt the track, they wontd-be compelled to lay
• np, and leave the people to walk in the snow.
k i.lt waa.atatod that one track, seventeen miles
• in length; used 400 bushels of salt in salting
/Ibetraaktwiot-
The Professor considered the effect of sali
iing the streets in preventing the decomposi
tioh of and animal matter,- so bene
... ificial, thathe ihougbtit would pay the Board
• j of-Heaithito use it in certain localities. The
Professorws* questioned as to the effect of
salt upoh-Uather, and also upon carpets. In
Vretpeot to the latter he said, -that as salt is
:uncotTOsive, it cannot stain -carpets any more
v thsawater alone. Salt'and'watet will not
■ h■- rchange-TOgetable colors! 1 With respect to tbe
, V; cfletit of salt -and water upon leather the
r-l -'Professor-was not so positive, but he did not
- cee how it could do any permanent injury.
A gentleman said that he had_made a tol*
culatiop to .see if. the ordinance requiring
i -the snow to he bleared from the streets in five
day*/could 1 be'enforced. He found that a
1 fbolofsirowin this ft miles of paved streets,
- wouH make’ 11,800,000 cubic fret or snow.
*5- Allowing fiOcubio fret to the cart load, it
--would require 5,940 carta, taking eight loads
• each per day,; to remove it. The number of
registered carts, wagons/ hand-barrows, last
year, was 3,500,-sp that It was“plaih that if a
■' - frot of show fell,’ the' erdlnftnco could not be
complied with. '
•- Our passenger railways have fortunately
2 apt been troubled much with snow during the
winter, aud very little salt has been
uedd. Tbe idea that It hi injurious to health
- -Ims been pretty effectually exploded. by Prof.
Bogers/and we presume that all abjections on
this score will be withdrawn.

OVAL CARBON OIL
LAMP CHIMNEYS.
Patented October Bth, 1861.
The best that hare ever yet been offered to the
pobiic. They are the best for tbo following reasons:
1. of on oval shape, the gluvi la
everywhere equally distant from the dame, so that
tbe draft is stronger and more regular.
2. The oval shape D better adapted to resist the
effect of Midden expansion, so that it is impossible to
crack them.
3. The glass D mado largely of Lead end PearUsb,
giving a great degree of strength and elasticity. The
chimneys which housekeepers hare found to be so
brittle as to crack, even when not in use, are invaria
bly made of Lime Glaae instoed of Flint GUsa.’of
which ours are manufactured.
4. But the greatest advantage of those Chimneys is
that when you have one-U will last forever, and if
any housekeeper breaks one by the heat of tbe lamp,
let her call at the manufactory and we will roph.ee
her cracked chimney by a dozen wbolo ones. This
ireffer dues not include accidents or those caaee of
ireakage where the chimney has, through inexperi
ence, been screwed so closely to the lamp a* to pre
vent its expansion when heated.
Manufacturers and consumer* of Carbon Oil, who
bare felt the magnitude of the obstacle, which has
existed in tbe great expense of chimneys, in the way
of tbe universal use of the oR, have found aremody in
the Oval XX FUnt Glass Chimneys, which has nmte
riaily lessened the cost of Carl<ou OU light to tboso
who use them, and increased the consumption of oil
consequent upon the lessened expense for chimneys.
