the enemy have gradually and
at-leiaure gathered up their immense re

energies to envelope the Confederacy with
their armies and fleets, and to penetrate the
interior from some one of many alternative

Weather ohanges in the ordinary coarse of
the earth round the sun; and at thitr mo
ment we find ourselves in the face of su
perior foroes wherever we look, whether to
the Borth, tho East or the West or the South
itaelf. Gen. Sydney Johnston has to strain
avery nerve to prevent the military as well
as geographical heart of the country from
slipping out of his grasp.' Generals Joßoph
■Johnston and Beauregard are held by Mo-
Clellui on the Potomac aa in a vice. A gi
gantic armament is ready to attempt the
descent of the Mississippi, and their fleets
<?n the Atlantis seacoast and tho Gulf are
too freshly before the public attention to re
qulre remembrance. Such are the fruits
of a policy purely defensive. Without
oven the hesitancy which would come of a
possible interruption, the enemy have thus
surrounded the'Southern Confederacy; and
if permitted to repeat, as often as maybe
desired, their efforts to penetrate its heart,
they Win necessarily attain the place and
the time where succesa hwaita them.
The Examiner thinks Vthere is only one
chance of escape for the rebels, and that is
so absurd that their case must be desperate
indeed. It favors reinforcing Gen. Syd
ney Johnston at Bowling Green, to
that General to whip Buell, occupy Louis
nlle, take Cincinnati and make a dash into
Ohio—Urns breaking the back of the Boa
Conatriotor winding around the Confeder
ates. The article reasons the question at
some length, and winds up as follows:

If that igjthe only “rational" hope of the
rebell, thoir doom is sealed. Tho defeat of
ZoLiicorrEK has rendered Johnston's posi
tion untonablo, and there is now far more
probability of Tennessee falling inU) our
-hands in the next six weeks than there is
of-Johnston being able to hold his poisition,
lot, alone marching on Louisville. Eastern
Tennessee is now open to us by the dofeat
of Zotucomn, and as soon as that is oc
cupied by our troops, and tho Union spirit

a right place to bmin. The editor of the
Examiner had better be packing up.

The speculations concerning the destina
tion of the Burngide Expedition still con
tinue, and the speculators are more in the
fog than ever. The rebels are as much in
the dart as we are. The secret has been
well kept, but time must now soon develop
it. .A letter to the Richmond Dispatch

♦ _The RiTer Expedition.
A very reliable correspondent or the Cin
cinnati Gazette, in a letter from Cain., dated
Jan. 17, gives rather a gloomy prospect of
any expedition from thatquartor soon. Ho

number of 20,000,’ as some had it, or 40,000,'
aB others, ■are now on their way from St.

that uhe heavy fogs have been delaying the
expedition,' or that any fogs have been
giving trouble, excepting those on the
brains of the correspondents and telegraph
ers, who set the nation agog to hear from
the great Mississippi expedition. And, in
brief it is not true that any movement
down the Mississippi is at all likely to occur
for a fortnight or three weeks to come.”
He says that a naval officer told him that
they could go into an engagement with the
gunboats by the last of the week, but they
would not really be ready for two weeks
more.

If the fleet was ready the land is not,
