country which; has been pro
■calmed-and accepted as truths, there could
not, under any provocation, hare been such
“ ut *? urin fS of Bile. During the whole
controversy, from iu beginning, the Amer
ican press has not engaged in any vituper
•uon, nor .has it manifested any ill-will.
The law of the case has been argued with
such-lights ss Wre hare, by the press , and
by distinguished" publicists, and the: con
clusion has been invariably reached that
the act of Com. Wafers was defensible, but
not a hard word was said of England
*ow, even admit that England believes us
*reng in this act, what ocewion was there
or such a display , 0 f passion, a°<l even
gutiy? We can hardly help believing
that the War Party in England ate afraid
that we will yield to their demands, and
that they desire by insult and menace to
drive us to refuss.
The rebel envoys may be given up, and
the present storm blow over, but' the irri
tation consequent on it will: long rankle in
the American heart. It will not easily be
forgotten how England took advantage of
an accidental circumstance! in. the time of
our weakness and to make demands
which she would not -have made under
similar, provocation had this rebellion no
existence; nnd then to add to that demand
an outpouring of malice which the world
has seldom seen equalled. :
Whatever our .Government may do, we
oxpect it will tike care that oiir flag
i» not dishonored. If we cannot'hold the
rebel ambassadors on “the clearest princi
ples of international rights, send them back
—they are individually of no consequence
whatever—they would do us no more harm
in London than in Fort Warren. But
nothing outght to be yielded to England,
because she is a Great Power, and can do
us immense barm, which wo would not yield
to a sense of justice to the weakest power
on earth.
It will be sufficiently galling to our na
tional pride to accede to the demand made
of us ..-in the existing' circumstances, in
any way the matter may bo arranged, and
the Government will need a strong case to
present to the people. We trust they will
have It It would certainly be a great ca
limity to have* war with England at this
tune, and the Government does well to
avoid it, if possible, without national dis
honor. We 'fear, however, that other com
plications will arise before the rebellion is
subdued, whioh will render it difficult for
nit to maintain peace with agovernment
which does not seem averse to war. Wo
may humllate onrselves for nothing, if the
conduct commented on the following arti
cle is to be toleratod and sustained by the
British Government. Nassau, New Provi
dence, the place spoken of, is a British
