The Affair of the Nashville and the
Harvey Birch.
The affair of tho rebel steamor Nashville ami
the ship Harvey Birch, of which wo received
some particulars per tost steamor, created
considerable sensation in England. The de
tails of the affair are thus given by the
Southampton correspondent of the London
Ttmra f~
“ About -8 o'clock lat*t Tuesday morning
(13tb October,), when in latitude 49‘dog. 6'
min. North, longitude 9 deg. 52 min. West,
the Nashville fell in with the American ship
Harvey Birch, Capt. Nelson, bound frbm
Havre t 6 New York, in ballast, with the
American flag flying. Sho ran along sido of
her, and, as was stated to us, Opened her ports
and ordered tho ship to heave to, the flag to
be hauled down,- and the -oaptain to come, on
board immediately., This was done, and Cap
tain Nelson soon returned to his-ship with
orders ffom the captain of -the Nashville fur
all the crew to get their things ready is soon
as possible, and get ou hoard the Nnshrille,
as they intended to destroy the Harvey Birch.
They were allowed an hbuf or auhohrand a
half for this purpose, and got part lof their
things out* Thu men from tho strainer took

permitting Capt. Nelson to retainown
chronometer, but bo has lost $1,200-or $1,400
wprth of-personal; effects, books, charts, Ac.
They then set fire. V 0 tbe ship foro and aft,
apparently in the dcok houses, and'tbo vessel
wag soon in (lames from stom to stern. Tho
three masts were soon to go over-the side, and
the bull was still burning whan the steamer
left her. “Tho 'Harvey Birch was a fine full
rigged ship tons, ‘American measure
ment, and oost about $125,000 in her con
struction. - Sho had a total of twenty-nine
souls on board, including Mr. Blydenburg, (a
son of her owner),: who was a passenger, Cap
tain Nelson, tifo.mates, two boatswains, cook,
stewardj-carpcnter, and twenty seamen. The
“men were put in irons on board the steamer,
with the-eaceptfon ofthe eaptain and mate,
who were treated with great politeness, and
itept as prisoners until the arriyalofthe ves
sel here this morning, when they were inunQ
•diately landed iri.ihe docks, and set at liberty
With all the personal effects belonging to them.
It is stated that before they were putin irons,
the Confederate oath yos tendered to the men,
-which they refused to take, but Capt. Nelson
tells ns that be is not aware of the fact, al
though it may be correct.
Immediately -on, landing, Capt. , Nelson
waited upon Captain Britton, the American
Consul at this port, who has caused the crew
to be temporarily boarded at the Sailors'
Home, and made arrangements for them to be
forwarded home to New York intheHansa
steamer, which sails hence on Wednesday
next. 'Capt.- Britton has also put hijnself in
communication with Mr. Adams, tb4 Ameri
can Minister in London, and made , that gen
tleman acquainted with all the facts of the
cas4. ‘ On leaving the Nashville, Capt. Pea
gum told Capt. Nelson' that he hoped they
would not part bad friends, for what bad been
done was a simple act of retaliation' on the
Norihern States for invading their territories,
burnfngtheirhoQses, ill-treating (heir women,
and stealing thoir ncgroeij and_thoy were
bound to retaliate -on the property of the
North in overy way they could.
About 12 o'clock 1 the Nashville steamed
into dock, where, al mentioned above, she
now lios, and soon after shsjwai berthed, Capt.
Patey, the Admiralty Superintendent of mail
packet* at this port, weapon board, end hid
an interview with UmiCaptain.
. CoL Peyton, on agentof the Southern Con
federacy, and his. wife were on, board the
-Nashville, and left for London by the three
o'clock train.

Tbe Union members of the Legislature had

Mr. Crittenden would doubtless have, been
