Mr. Kellogg, of Illinois, anathematized
South Carolina, but believed thorn weijo Union
sentiments in Georgia and other States, which
should be encouraged, The negro question
he would let alone. If it was a blessing, let
the South enjoy it; if a curso, lot them

Mr. Colfax was for conducting tho war more
vigorously, for striking the rebel* hard, qUiok
blows, for confiscating everything they jms

such an element of strength to them, j He
was ballots and bayonets instead of olive

peace till every Union man from Virginia to
Texas could sit peaceably under his roof-treo
with none to molest or make him afraid. ,

THE CASE OFTHE ASMY BUTLSB8 —OPPOSITION
TO SENATOR WtUION’S BILL.
The correspondent of the N. Y. Time*
writes:
I bavo obtained a copy of a printed circular
issued by Bryant A Ruddall, a law firm in
Washington, and addressed 'to in
which tho notice of the proposal of Senator
Wilson to introduce a bill to abolish thobflice
of. sutler, which originally appeared id the
Time*, is mado tho basis of a call for a: con
tribution of $25 fr<?m each sutler as a) tend
for tho protection of their interests. The call
asks that tho funds be forwarded to Lewis
Johnson, Esq'., and Barker, and Treasurer of
tho Sailors’ Defence Fund. With tho circular
iff a blank petition to Congress, to bo signed
by the officers and privates of tho regiment,
announcing their satisfaction with thje ar
rangement. The prospect of losing the op
portunity for further extortions, is creating
tho most intenso feeling among the sutlers,
and no meaqs will bo left untried, to prevent
tho success of Senator Wilson’s bill.
Tho rritune correspondent writes on the
samo subject, andmuch to the same effect:
Tho sutlers are making groat efforts to de
feat Senator Wilaon’s bill for .tho protection of
soldiers against their extortion. Kot.satls
fiod with personal appeals to members of Con
gress, thoio who have the sutler’s pockbts at

circulation in tho camps, by which erery ven*

required to contribute twenty-fivo dollars to a
fund to bo asod to defeat tho measure in Con
gress. To men who eharge fivo oonts £ piece

the commonest envelopes, this sum is a mere
bagatelle. % :
It has not occurred to tho friends of the
private soldier to raise money to holp pn the

thanks; and letters enumerating some of the
extortions they have suffered.

Nearly the whole of Warrington has been
reduced to ashes by tho enemy’s shot and

among the buildings destroyed are the St.

them. You can walk over thorn, they are so
thick. Wo cannot ascertain what damage we
have dono. Our aim was deliberate and onr
fire slow. Every gun ,did execution, and one
shells hurst always just over Fort Pickens.
Our hoys would fire a big gun and then jump
on it and give cheers. They are perfectly de
lighted at the fun. The force engaged has
been MeCrae’s and Wheat's, and another bat
tery, all from Louisiana and Mississippi.; .The
enemy attempted a landing at Perdidoirivcr
on Sunday night, but were most signally re
pulsed by our gallant troops there. A negro
wagon driver was at Mcßao this morning
. when the firing commenced, and said ho prould
drivo his team to headquarters if Pickens
; killed him and every mule he had. A shot
killed onoof bis mules; he out it loose and
drove the remainder safely through. Gen.
Bragg says ho intends to mention him in his
report to tho government.
[From the Charleston Courier, Nov. 23.]
Pensacola, Nov. 29—8 A* M.
Both parties are silent this morning. I
walked down to the beach this morning and
looked at Pickons. Sho seems considerably
battered. Along dark placo upon bo? side,
which tho men say is shot marks, was plainly
visiblo. Poor Fort Mcßao suffered yesterday
far more than wo thought. Six men were
killed by the falling of the cover ofa rest, and
ten others wounded. They say five hundred shot
and shell fell into the fort. Tho damage was
done by ships, which took, position, southwest
of the fort, whore tho gunk Could not be very
effective, and fired broadside after broadside
upon her. A battery loeated just back jof her
Xidod in repelling the attack, and, it it said,
struck them 15 times. Only two ships jare off
the harbor this morning. I fear neither party
will renow the fight this morning. It they
do Mcßae will probably be abandoned (during
the day, and the battery behind her .worked;
But if she was leveled to the-sand, nothing
would be accomplished towards the redaction
of oar batteries. We hare never counted hoc
as anything in the fight.

j Gen. Halleck, in consequence of the Govera
] ment’a non-recognition of Fremont’s appoint

j direct from President Lincoln. This is an ex

The Cincinnati Gazette has the following in
a dispatch from Cairo, dated the 7th inst:
. The result of the conference between-Gen.
Grant and the rebel General Cheatham under
a flag of truce, yesterday/! learn j will be the
: release of fifteen of. the number of Federal
prisoners now at Memphis. They are expect
ed here to-morrow.
‘ From a reliable source, I learn that a black

Letters divulging ah'extensive contraband
trade from this State with; the rebels have been
received by Gen. Grant. A trap for the inter
ception of the parties connected has bcon laid,
and will donbtlesslbe successful.
A force of nine hundred cavalry left Bird's
Point last night by tho order of Gen. Grant,
and roconnoitored as far as Belmont, where
it was reported a number of cannon had been
planted. The object was to take or spike
them, but, neither onemy. nor cannon being
found, the force returned this morning.
Heavy Swindle—s3o,oo9 Involved.
Two residents of this city, within the past
few weeks, have perpetrated one of the grand
dest swindles it has ever been onr lot to re
cord. It appears Uiat they visited the.bakers
of this city and sdrrounding towns, and pro
cured large orders from them for flour at de
preciated prices. ‘They then by -false repre
sentations, fraudulent letters,.and
tion of their large orders, prevailed upon
Messrs. Smith, Woodbury & Co., Jesse
Hoyt A Co., and other firms of the New York
Corn Exchange,!to sell them flour to the
amount of nearly]s3o,ooo, at thirty days.
The flour was shipped 1 to thtt city, and it
is presumed was disposed of to various par
ries, the swindlers receiving cash, with which,
instead of paying the New .York firms, they
loft for some-unknown locality. Yesterday
some of the. swindled merchants, who had in
the meantime probably smelt a rather largo
rat, came to this city, and gotting trace of
large quantities of the flour yet in store, got
out writs of replevin, and during the after
noon Sheriff Reynolds took possession of some
four hundred barrels-stored at No. 277 Mar
ket street, one hundred at a bakery in the
Sixth ward, and somo other smaller lots in
other parts of the city.— Nemtrh Mereury.
