John Slidell.
This noted Southern aristocrat, and pesti
lent traitor, ia the eon of an honest tallow
chandler, and was born in New. York. Yonag
Slidell from bia youth affected aristocratic airs,
and was frequently snubbed by those who
vrere acquainted with bia father's honest oc
cupation. It ia eatd that in conversation with
a lady he' pompously mentioned hi# intention
ot visiting foreign parts. Tbe lady commend
ed bis views or foreign travel, and qaietly re
marked that she thought he would feel at
home in Grttee. He ia aaid to be a mean man
and a consummate hypocrite. The New York
gives tbe following sketch ol bia life:
Mr. John Slidell, si preienk residing in Tori
Warren, is a native of this city; Dik father
Was a very respectable tallow chandler, and
was for some time President of the Mechanics*
Bank. In tbe times when the 'compact part
of tbe city hardly extended above Houston
street, the family residence was ob the Bloom
■ngdale road, at or abont the present Intersec
tion of Thirtieth-street with Broadway, and ia
still standing. One oi the prominent events of
John Slidell’s hie city was hia duel
with Stephen Price, tbe manager of the Park
Theatre. For some cauae Price challenged
Slidell, then an enterprising 'young merchant.
They fought in the early morning oi a day, on
which Price was to give a large dinner party.
By some curious mischance Price was
shot in a delicate posterior region, bnt the
dinnerparty came ofT notwithstanding, Price
receiving bis guests Iu bed. It was this duel,
and tbe scandal arising from it, that induced
Slidell to become a resident of New Orleans;
•Stephen Price was, a noted duellat. On
one occasion a British officer named Green, on
bis Way to got into some difficulty
with Pries’* younger brother at'thePark The
atre, but the matter was settlsd quietly. On
arriving at his post Green was taunted by s
brother officer at the mess-table with not
having resented an insult-given by a Yankee.
Green retnrned to New and challenged
Young Price. They fought and Price was
killed. Stephen Price betrayed no resentment
towards Green, hut hearing some > time after-'

was at the City Hotel, he called there, and
