upon the report that General Metellin did
not receive the cordial support (rain Gan. Scott
to which he la entitled, we have come into; es
session of information which leads no to fear
that there i.e some measure of truth in that
rumor,—truth ee,far as this, that the junior has
a more vivid eonvietion of the immense neceesi
ties of the cam than the senior bap. We have
reason to believe that it is to General McClellan
that the country own the present numerical
magnitude and the otherwise gratifying condi
tion of the army at Washington, and eapeelally
its reorganisation according to modern usage,
with a given proportion of artillery andAavalry;
and it Is undoubtedly true that to his indomita
ble energy and megrims activity thearmy owes
Its superior and now almost perfect discipline.
Nor have-we the shadow of a doubt, judging
from facts that havenome within our knowledge,
that to General MeClellan's determination to
bring about this stabs of things, ha. firm resole.
don that the military power of the Union should
be brought up to the exigencies of the occasion,
does the country owe the safety of the capital,
the tenure of Maryland, and the present defiant
position of the federal government."
/t Is reiterated, by Washington °erre-
Ppondente, that the undertaking, atEdwards'
Ferry was not by Gen. McClellan's direc
tion, and it is asserted in emne quarters,
that it was made by orders of Gen. Scott.
Gen. NoGlellan le, however, highly gratified
with the conduot - of the men, and hen boned
an order epee ting in the highest praise of
the oottduct of the men engaged. He speaks
of the extraordinary obstacles they had to
encounter, and asserts that the same bra

Mr. Forney writes to the Press as follows:
"Gen. McClellan does not seem to hare
loot any of hie confidence and energy since
the affair at Ball's Bluff. He is in the high
est spirits, and I learn, from the best au
thority, that the army under his command
is equal to one hundred and fifty thousand
well seasoned troops, and ready to be led to
the attack at any moment. Although this
affair was undoubtedly a Ouster, and, un
der ordinary circumstances, might produce
delay, : yet In contrast with the enormous
army under Me control, and his long-pre•
pared programme, it may be regarded as a
matter of comparatively subordinate impor
tance, It ought to be borne in mind that,
in our advance into Virginia, we are con
tending against a toe that knows hie ground,
and against the influence of sestet enemies,
who convey every item of intelligence to the
rebel leaders. Ido not doubt that in a very
short time you will receive good news, and
that the men eo long panting for an oppor

an open fiold will be gratified."
