Ie tbe, midst of the confusion of aceminte
curceraing the late bailie 'au the Peleteee,
it hes bean difficult to tall the true position
of affairs. It it quite evident that our troop
orStone's JITIIIen, (commanded by (Maid
Baker, coot with *repulse, and a very eevere
Ices, and that they were driven beak acmes
the river, or rather to Barrison's island,
in the middle of the river. At the same time
it was elated that Gm Banks had effected
a lodgment In Virginia, and that be now
held possession of the. Southern shore, and
Gem hlcClellan had clotted the troupe on the
Virginia aide, land that everything was
secure.
The accounts were etientifueed that double
- were entertainediuWashidgtou, on Wed
nesday, whether Mir troolip had posseseion
of the Booth bank at all.
The true account seems to be this: Gen.
Stone's troops tressed at Conrad's Ferry,
about five miles below Edward!? Ferry,
while ODD. Bents creased at Eiwarde Ferry.
Gen. Stone', troops were repotted with great
loss, and driven batik to Harrison'a Island,
while Um Banks effected a lodgment with
out much dilMiulty.
By the despatch in another column, we
learn that our troops have retired from the
Virginia shore, bOth at Harrison's Island,
and at Edwards' Ferry.
The difficulty of throwing over itroope
wee very great. The river ie high, libelee
had nothing but two or three ectows - to effect
a passage, so that there waa no possibility
of reinforcing our men in time. It . seeme
amazing if mob an effort was to be made,
that boats were not prepared, or a pontoon
bridge constructed, so that the army could
have passed easily and safely. We hope
something' will be learned by these repeated
disasters.
Our men did all that men could do at the
battle of Conn& Ferry. , They fought
bravely, but were outnumbered, and were at
a disidvantavi in every reepear The con
aequenoe wan there was a great loss of life,
especially in officers, while the enemy did
not suffer much. The following, taken from
the New York Tribune, is the only intelligi
ble amount we have seen :
Capt. F. G. Young, of New York , aid to
Col. Baker, and who was with him when he
died, gives the following see:tont :
"Gen. Stone prdered Col. Biker, on Sun,
day evening, to have his brigade ready to
move at 7 o'clock on Monday morning.
The brigade was then stationed five miles
from Conrad's Ferry. At 3 o'clock in the
morning, however, a messenger from Gen.
Stone ordered the first battalion, under
Lieutenant Colonel Wittier,' to move immell
diately, so as to be at Conrad's Ferry at sun—
rise, which they did, and reported them.
selvesleflen. Stone.
"Orders were then sent from 'General
Stone to the battalion, to stand fast until
they should hear heavy firing in front, and
then to cross. AbOul an hour afterward;
musketry having been heard previously,
dead and wounded began to be brought over
to where we were. At 10 o'clock the num
ber of killed and wounded brought in was
increased. General Stone ordered Colonel
Baker to take command of the forces on
both - sides of the river 'at that place; and to
bring up his thigade'and the Tsmtnity re
giment, commanded by Colonel Coggewell,
which was in camp about three miles
distant. and to cross immediately.
"Captain Young carried the orders to the
Tammany Regiment, and the whole force
proceeded about a mile down the river,
ready to cross. We found two scloire, vanh
of which could carry from forty to fifty men,
and - managed to get from the canal a dug
out, which would take sixty or seventy more ;
"Six companies of the first battalion of the
California Regiment, three pieces of artil
lery, with men and horses belonging to the
Tammany Regiment, with Col. Baker, Col.
Coggewell, Lieutenant-Colonel Wistar, As
sistant Adjutant- Generatllarvey, and Capt.
Young, got to the island, where we were
joined by a battery of the Seccird Rhode
island Artillery, with two small howitzers.
The passage to the island was very difficult
with our insufficient mosneof transporta
tion, the distance being a quarter of a mile,
and the current Swift. We poled ourselves
up the eastern ehore a long distance, thence
Were drifted down to the landing. From
the island to the Virginia shore, our only
means of transportation was one scow and
a metallikbost, of little or no service. We
landed wider a steep bank, 100 feet high,
.covered with rocks and jungle.
"Scrambling up the bank, we found an
open - field of six acres, with thick woods on',
three aides, out of whit b came a apeman!,
irregular firing from the enemy.' Here
were Col. Devin's Fifteenth Mamisclusette
regiment on the right in line at the edge of
the woods, having been driven in after pro
ceeding a mile and a half toward Leesburg.
We formed on the left, and presently ad
vanced two companies of skirmiehers to the
woods in front. - The conoealed enemy drove
them back with a heavy, telliniTvolley, and
folldwing the regular with au irregular 6r

the brow of the hill, the enemy not. being
in eight., The artillery could not be served

"Capt. Stewart, of Gen. Stone's stiff,
with a message to Col. ,Baker to bold his
ground, as Gen. Gorman, with 5,000 men,
was marching from Edwards' Ferry to rein
force him. One company was advanced to
the left, the direction from which Gen. Gor

yell and'• volley as before, and fell back to
'the line. The hidden enemy now appeared
to be in force on th s iee -idea of us, which,
with the river at their back, disheartened
the men,
