ng items: • /
We are informed that bird Baker took
he late train from this city, last evening,
o meet the body of her hueband at Wash-
legion, and take meseures to wore ite•
proper joie:meet. -The death of Col. Baker
resents a aueions tnoident, amouotiog to
presentiment, Which happened the day he
left thin city to j'311:411 0011111111;
to CoT. Crossman, oommtadant of the 'At.-
meal, he said solemnly, •'My dear friend
good bye ; never meet you again."
Toe tune hes verified his speech, and Baker
having performed his duty, gave up his life.
—Another incident. dating a long way back,
but not leetveraolons, may be hero inserted.
When a weaver's boy, it was Baker's cue
tom to mango the loom with one, hand, and
with the other steady a book uporiltie knee.
A friend, coming hastily into the shop one
day, saw him thus engaged, and weeping
bitterly.
" What admits , you, my lad ? " said he;
" What are you reading ? "
"The Constitution of the United Buttes,"
said the boy " and here I find that no for
eigner can be President ; while I am of Bug.
lieu birth."
In an article 'in the N. Y. Tribune, Mr.
George Wilkee pays a glowing tribute to -
Seiator Baker, and in the courao of the ar
ticle tape
"It was my good fortune to know Colonel.
Baker well, and -I had the honor to enter
tain him at dinner in August last. On that
pecasion, when 1-.:pressed (In view of the
recent disaster at Manassas) a natural con
cern as to the deportment ofhis troops, he
said : 'Wilkes, I have some peculiar notions
as to the part I am to ploy , in this extraor
dinary war; and I want 'you to bear in mind
that labial now Say to you is not the result
of soy idle fancy or vague impression. It
is .doubtful if 1 shall ever again take my
seat in the Senate t' To the look of our
p whiott I turned upon him at this ex
pre lon, he replied, 'I am certain I shall
not Ire through this war, and if my troops
should show any want of reeolution, I shall
fallie the first battle. I cannot afford, after
my career in Mexico, and as a Senator of
the United States, to tare my face from the
enemy l' There was no . gloom or depres
sion in his manner, bat It was characterized
bi a temperate earnestness which made a
deep impression on my mind."
The reader will recollect that after the
battle of Bull Bun, Mr. Baker made a mem
orable speech. in. the Senate, in reply to
Brechinridge. it was probably hie greatest
effort, and produced a great sensation at
the time. That emelt would now be read
with- - aridity. We give the following elo
quent paragraph, which shows the teenage
of hie heart at the lime, and which he enter
tained until he laid down hie life on the
field of battle:
• Sir,' it is not s question of men or money
In that tepee.. All the money, all the men,
are, In our judgment, well bestowed in such
a canee. When we give them we know their
value. towing their value well, we give
them with the more pride and the more joy.
Sir, how can we retreat? Sir, bow can we
make peace! Who shall treat? What
0001211111013 ere 2 Who would go ? Upon \
what terms ? Where is to be your boundary
line? Where the end of the principles we
shall have to give np ? What will become
of Constitutional Government ? What will
become-o 1 public liberty? What of past
gloriee? What of future hopes 2 Shall we
milk into the insignificance of the grave—
! degraded, defeated, emasoulsted people,
frightened by the results of one battle, Med
attired at the visions raised by the imagina
tion of the Senstor from Kentucky upon
this floor 2 No, air; a thousand time no,
air! We will rally—if, Indeed our wordi
be necesearyL-we will tally the people, the
loyal people of the whole - aontry. They
will pour forth their trounce, their money,
their men, without stint, without measure.
The moat peaceable man in this body may
stamp his foot upon this Senate Chamber
floor, se of old a warrior and a Senator did,
and from that single stamp there will spring
' forth armed legions. Shall one battle de
. tenable the fate of an empire, or a dozen ?
the toes of off° thousand men, or twenty I
thousand. or 4100,000,000 or $000,000,000?
In a year's peace, or ten years at most, of
peaceful progress, we can restore them all.
There will be some graves reeking with
blood, watered by the tears' of affection.
There will be some-privation; there will be
some lees of luxury; there will be some
what more need for labor to procure the se
oesearies of lite. When that id 'laid, ail ie
said. If we hue the country, the whole
country, the Uniedi, - the Constitution, free
Government—with these there will return
all thebleniage of well-adered civilization;
the path of the country will _be a career of
grehinose and glory such as, in the olden
time, oar fathers saw in the dim visione of
years yet In come, and such as would have
been ours now„to:day, if it had not been
for this treason for which' the Senator too
often seeks to apologize.
