LETTER NRO2I FORTRESS MONROE
:ourieeporidems of the Pittsburgh Gazette.)
POET/MIX NOPIROE, Oct. 21, 1861.
The fleet continues to gather here, upwards
of seventy. : vessels being now id the harbor,
and this 'number does not include any from
Annapolis. The arrivals are about twenty a
day, and it looks, now, as if the fleet would
contain over a hundred vessels.
A strong north-east wind is now blowing,
and has been blowing for twenty-four hour..
Art Jong as,it irate, the fleet cannot sail, and it
ma i last fin a week to come. Such storms
prevail at this season of the year, arid this one
looks self - likely to'contin tie some time. The
waves are tinning high in the harbor, and the
smaller vessel, pitch and rock with the swell
of every billow, in a manner quite augiestive
of sea-sickness, premoniabing what we pooi
land-lubber' are to expect whoa we get afloat.
Well, as the little boy said to his fellow, antler

' , Thu is an afa ction we all have to node:ire."
The Pawnee steamed up this afternoon and
went up to Newport's News, and we learn by
lie steamer Express, just in from there, that
our pickets were driven in, there, this' morn.
in;, by the Rebels, that the ambulances were
leaving for the scene of action and that three
regiment, had been ordered out, just al it left,
at eleven o'clock this morning. This indi.
cites a battle up there, bat we cannot get the .
details until 'after the mail boats lees., fOr -
Baltimore.
I do not know how many men we have
at Newport's New, ; bur the garrison at this
poet is too small to be of roach service to
them if they were attacked by a supetior force
of the enemy. The war verso's here, howev.
er, can pus up there and render essential ter.
vice to suataining the force on shore. Gen.
Mansfield is today, I believe, with the regi
ment. et that point.
It is probably the Intention of the enemy to
matte a joint demonstration from Norfolk and
Jamie River, as soon as the expedition leaves,
in the hope of getting out the Merrimac and
other imprisoned remade. This hope, however,
b idle, as the Minnesota and other vends will
remain here, and treat them to an entertainment
they Utile export.
It is cold enough, to.day, - with this .unpleas

the SDLEOII la now far enough advanced for the

these facts :

3. That, as between the Rebels andibe
