FOILT/LLSI 5101VMM, pc.. 19, 11;61.
The Portreca Monroe has been no often de
scribed that most readers are familiar with it;
and hence I need not attempt it. The spot,
however, is an interesting one, and no one can
walk over the ground without rejoicing that
this place did not fall into the hands of the
rebels, as Norfolk did.' They would then have
had complete control of Chesapeake Bay, a
secure naval rendezvous, and an impregnable
fortress, to say nothing of the immense num.
bar of guns contained here.
There can be no doubt that the eel,' cap.
lure of this place was a part of the rebel plan.
' But, thanks to the firmness of Col. Dimmick,
the cfficer in command, the place was retained
in our hands, although he had but a handful
of men with him within its walls. That vat.
heat officer left here yesterday, having been
ordered to other duty, and he deserves re.
inembralica fir the courage he displayed in
setting the rebels at defiance at a time whim
he was but •poorly prepared to resist them, and
...when everything depended upon his holding
posseesion.

the lock of a canal. The gates can be closed
at high' tide, if desired, but the water can
never fall below the level of low tide, at which
the depth is too great to admit of its being ford

A TXRILIALZ MARCH ALONG TUC Senn BRANCH.
We have published full particular, of the
recent capture of about fifty members- of the
Indiana Twentieth Regiment, on board the
steamer Fanny, near Cape Hatteras, and also
of the subsequent retreat of the ingitneet:
We find in the Indianapolis Arurnal several
letters from a member of the Indiana troops
at. Hatters'', which are very interesting, and
throw new light upon some of the state.
meets already laid before our readers. About
the last of September the greater part of the
regiment had been sent about forty miles from
Fort Hatteras, and by the 2d of October were
short of provisions. The event. which follow
ed are thus described :
"Odober 2d.—About two p. in. the propel
ler Fanny hove in sight. Major Smith, Quar
termaster Evans and myself boarded her in a
fisherman", skiff, while the boys followed with
their batteanz to take off supplies. We found
her aground, two Mara from shore,. heavily_
loaded with provisions and ammunition, in
charge of some thirty of our men, the crew,
and ten of Hawkins' Zonaves to man the guns,
of which there were two.. Taking enough
provisions in the skiff for supper, we left, and
were followed by the barge, heavily loaded
with ammunition, tents and proviiiona. ,,
The provisions and ammunition in the barge
and'skiff were safely landed. The letter then
continues:
Shortly after, a a noth er , lmed up in the
distance, followed by lad then an.
other, and than they all. three commenced
firing heavy gun. at the Fanny. She returned
the fire for a time, moved a little from her firm
pronto°, but soon got aground again, and the
rebel steamer, closing.soon captured her, and
all the ammunition and provisions Jett on
board.
t was an exciting scene, and the whole reg.
invent was drawn up on the beach to witneas
the battle. We could see the puff of smoke
11 and the splash of the ebrit and shell in the
the
water, but could not hear the rejiort, owing to
wind blowing off shore, an the dutance.
; It was an exciting scene and rmortif, ing one,
for there were we, seven hundred strong, ready
end eager to take part in the battle, yet not a
fu a-boat, not a piece of artillery, nothing but
a dozen baking 'kith to cope with - theme steam
er.. We had to stand like chlldreii and see
oar boat, our provision* and our men captured
before our eyes.

They intended, after taking us, to rub down
the beach in force, and with light-draught
iteaniiire on the Sound, to take Forts Hatteras
and Clark, as:they swore that they had built
them, and thej would have them. And they
would have done as had not our regiment run
the gantlet {and foiled them. No later than
yesterday they chased the United States item
er Sirius plump into Hatteras, ender the very
guns of the fort. The excitement wasintenee.
The enemy were preparing to lend, our troops
waiting to receive them, when Col. Brown re
ceived a peremptory order from Col. Hawkins
to retreat. A meeting of the commie:atoned
officern was called, and it was decided that,
under the Circumstance', it was moat judicious.
to retreat, and we sorrowfully turned our
back. on oar camp, and prepared lot the long
march to Hitteras light-house, where we ex•
petted reinforcement. frqm Col. Hawkins It
was now nine o'clock in the morning.
•
rte NARCU OVER TUN SAID.
The run was shining on the white sand of
the beach, heating the air as if it were a fur.
nace. The men had neither provisions or
water. The halite in which they had tubed
to repel the enemy prevented this, and it we.
too late tp go back to camp.
It was et much I shall never lomat. The
first ten miles was terrible.. No water, the
men unused to long marches, the sand heavy
and the feet of the men s`leking into it at every
step, and a point below to be gained in order
to join Company F, to prevent their being cut
off. As the regiment pulled along man alter
man would stagger from the ranks and fall
upon the hot sand.
But the most powerful night of all was the
islanders leaving their homes, from fear of the
enemy. They could be seen in group, some
times with a little cart, carrying their prowl.-
ions, bat mostly with nothing, fleeing for dear
lite. Mothers currying their babes, fathers
leading along little boys, grandfather, and
grandmothers struggling along tram homes
they had left before. Relying on• our
protection, they had been our friend., but . in
en evil hour we were compelled to leave them.
We toiled on, the heat most intense, and no
water. Burger woe nothing in comparison
with thirst. It wu maddening. The sea roll
top at our feet and nothing to drink. Man after
man wandered towards the Sound to drink the
Water of the menthes. I started to take a
scout to watch the movements of the enemy's
vessel.. I skirted the Sound :or some ten
mile,. lo•every c.: umpOl blither, I would find
men utterly exhausted. The entinWs vessels
were now nearly opposite, steaming down
the Sound to cut off our retreat. I would tell
them this, but they would say, "They did nut
care, they would die there," so utterly hope
less did they seem. rz
• MIRACULOUS 'UNCAPS.
We reached the narrow inlet about five
miles above Hatteras Ught-house, and here our
great danger was at once seen. The fleet of
the enemy had drawn up in line, so as to sweep
the beach and render a passage impossible,
but bed neglectod to land their men. It was
novrosear twilight. The clouds in the vest re
newed the bright tints of the sun, and showed
us the enemy in the foreground. In the east
heavy grey clouds lowered, and our uniforms
corresponding bid us from their view, as we
silently stole along, the roar of the surf drown
ing the footsteps of the men and the commands
of the officers, yet every little white we would
watch, expecting to Bee the flash of the enemy's
cannon, or hear the report of the bursting shell
in our little band. It was a narsow escape,
and a providential one, and our Colonel was
affected to tears at the danger we had passe t.
,The men reached the light-house in safety,
and were there reinforced, and provided with
water and provisions. Then the Federal ships
steamed up the coast and bombarded the Con
federates with great effect.
