Dr. Gurley was a farSritti with Mr. Einehin

then traitors and conspirators against the
very Goveniment and Constitution they had
ewarn to uphold, we were not of opinion
that there was any moral imprOPabilify In
such a discourse prooeeding from snail a

the "fitness of tbinge" struck us as a corrob

The editor of the Banner does not exactly
undertake to ; contradict this report upon
any authority. fie does indeed do so upon
what we may call an argument, or consid
eration of probabilities, from a friendly
standpoint, as follows: -
"Dr. Gurley is a Presbyterial*, and one
of the most godly and eminent inhibitors In.
our Church. * * * Dr. Gurley, being
-a minister of God's Word, and bound by
Ile teachings, doubtless both believes and
presehei," dp , , &a.
From this 'stand-point, the editor. of the
Banner conceives that Dr Gurley nittst have
argued thus:
•
"The war le upon the land on.lotiouat of
our eine. Ooe of those sins is, Sympathy
with crime anti a shielding of criminals.
Another is the cruel oppreseioh of the
blacks, four millions of whom are denied
some Of the most precious rights Which God ,
has allotted to man. Other Iniquities, also,
great and terrible, have abounded; and- no
sober, calm, intelligent ChristiaM minister,
as Dr. Gurley certainly le; would single out
one of them, and espeoially one "lab, as
specified, is found In but few of the Buttes,
as .the reason why the Almighty has brought
this war upon us."
Now, there is but one Gnat - word to say.
If the above is a fair outline of Dr. Gurley's
discourse; the Bonner is not more - ready to
instain the soundness of Dr. Gurley than
is the Paranusou Gezira. •

Anlmporiant European' Complication
The mails of the Arabia bring- as inter
esting information upon the subject of the
Prussian attitude with regard to the claims
of Austria on Venetia. The faints which
we here state, combined with - the visit ,of
the Bing of Prussia to the French Emperor
tit Compiegne, must create a European
sensation which no circular such as that
sent to all the German states by the former
can succeed in dispelling.
The Dresden Journal affirms that, after
the coronation of the King of Prussia, di
rect negotiations will commence, with the
object of establishing more intimate rela
tions with Austria and with this purpose
a member of the royal family, perhapelhe
King himself, will visit Vienna towards the
end of the autumn. The Cologoe Gazette
says that the Prussian people will view
every step of this kind with the greatest
aversion, and that Austria, having labored
for years in vain to maintain her trans-Al
pine domination, is at last trying to involve
Prussia in the impossible scheme. It adds
that Count &mato% Prussian Minister of
,Foreign Affairs, is disposed to involve Prus
sia in the Imbroglio. The Prussian Diet,
however, has protested solemnly in its ad.
dress to the King against any sacrifice on
the part of Prussia for the sake of Venetia.
This protest of one Chamber, (says the
Journal,) is a weight which, in a constitm
tional country, presses enormously in the
balance."
She Bonn Gazette (also Prussian) advi
ses Austria to consider Venetia "a lost poet,"
and not to look to Prussia, whom she is
now trying to wheedle with ungaarantied
offers like that of 'a. share in the federal
army," for any assistance whatever.
The Journal de Frankfort says:
--
"The Prussian recognition of the King
dom of United Italy is nearer at hand than
is generally believed. Even, however, if it
ibould be delayed, public opinion hos too
clearly -pronounced in favor of such a
measure for the government to refuse it for
any length of time."
`A Black Man Protected.-
Mr. Gerard Ralston, the British Consul-
General to Liberia, writing to Lord
-Brougham, during the month of Septem
ber, gives the following intelligence :
have before me the passport granted
to the Rev. Henry H. Garnet a black man
of note and of great distinction among
the degrees of New York, given by
William H. Seward, the Secretary of
State, dated Washington, August 26,1881,
in which the Secretary 'requests all whom
it may owern to permit safely and freely
to pave Henry H. Garnet, a citizen of the
United States, and in case of need to give
him all lawful aid and protection.' ibis
passport is impressed by the seal of the
Department of State and signed by the
Secretary of State in the 86th year of the
independence of the United - Statee. Your
lordship is aware that by the decision- of
the federal Chief Justice Taney, all
negroes and mulattoes, all persons with
the least drop of black man's blood in their
veins, were pronounced to be not American
citizens, and to have none of the privileges
and protection due to Americans. I have
no_ doubt but that the Supreme Court will
be soon so constituted as to procure an
early reversal of the 'Died Scott' decision;
and although passports to persons of color
had-before been frequently refused by the
influence of southern control over the State
Department, this is the first passport
granted to a colored person since the 'Dred
tcott' decision was promulgated."

Rebel Agents elanagnr European Tel .
The agency of Mr. Hinter is the chan
nel through which telegraphic information
is distributed to the English and Conti
nental jonrnali. The following news,
which ;be Agency sends to the entire
European Press, as coming "direct from
the Southern States," shows how indefat
igably the rebel emissaries are working to
mould public opinion in Europe :
" The - cotton loan to the Confederate
Government amounted to 1,000,000 bales,
okihe 6th, September. On that day—
the day that he was reported to have died
—President Davis was in his office at
Richmond, attending hie official duties.
The news is confirmed that the authorities
of Spain, in Cubs, have issued an order to
have the same protection extended to vett
eels sailing under the Confederate Sag that
is enjoyed by the Sags of other countries.
At Richmond, the loss estimated of the
enemy at Managua is 15,000 in killed,
wounded And prisoners. McClellan is
closely hemmed in between the lines of
Beauregard and Johnson and the Potomac.
No importance whatever.was attached to
the loss of Hatteras. The Press in the
South is at liberty to discuss public mat-.
ters freely. Never were a people more cor.
&MIT united than the citizens of the Con
federate States. The cotton picking sea
son had fully commencnd, and the plant
ers were storing their crops away in the
seed on their estates, there to remain at
the disposal of Government until the rai
sing of the blockade."
PREPILILINO TO Ricca/vs Tazw.—The Se
cession newspaper, are actively discussing the
projected naval expedition against the South
ern coast. They profess to be lolly posted op
in respect to its magnitude, it not its destina

welcome.
