ahem reigned supreme. The army of the Union
occupies, the whole of Western Virginia. The
head.qaarters of the commander is perched
upon the summit of-Chest Mountain, and,
though many a brave son of the north haa Italo

The authority of the - Mationalamd State Gov

order restored.
This place is within eight of Rich Mountain,
where the brave McClellan taught the rebels
that theratrong arm of the Federal Government-,
could resch.thena in the mountain lastneises,
even behind intrenchmente. In strolling
throegh the town, I happened apon the fresh
graves of theme who had died in the rebel
camp, and in spite of the recollection of the
unholy cense in which they feWl. could not
burfeel_eadly, to think that many a misguided,
deluded youth had left a happy home to siert
fice his fife in the vain effort to establish a few
uturernpulons and designing knaves in power.
The hardships and trials of the revels in these
mountains will be told. From the many
bush huts which occupy their former camping
grounds, it is evident that. a great many of
them were without the ordinary comforts of
camp life. flow inch an ill-provided army

their graves, I felt gratified that no monument
would'ever mark their resting place to com
memorate their errors. When the cod 'shall
have grown green over_their graves, their',
resting plate will be known only to Him who
will judge all thieve rightly.
About a thousand troops occupy this place.
Amongst . the number is a part of two cam-,

into .service a, Virginians. _Capt. Gilman, 'of
Pittsburgh, is here, and I regret to say le con.

well provided with good clothes and plenty of

they will be ordered for winter guarteis. All
appear to agree that the meantime will be in

anxious to be ordered to Kentucky or Ten
