TUESDAY MORNING, OCT. 16, 1861
Into Mating from Japan
The Kanagawa correspondent of the Herald
gives the following account of the murderous
attack made on the British Legation in Jeddo,
of which we bad a brief notice in the tale
graphic summary of foreign nerve :
A Murderous attack was made upon the
British Legation in Jeddo on the night of the
6th` inn, by a bond of some fifty Japanese
robbers with the intent of killing the Bntish
Minister, Mr. Alopok, and making a clean
sweep by killing every member attinthed to the
Legation; but fortaaately they wore foiled in
their diabolical attempt.
No one belonging - to the Legation was killed
orjtrlouoly hurt, except Mr. Oliphant, who re-
Cana a serious cut; on the wrist and land,
which be will be most likely to lose, and per
haps his arm, owing to the excessive hot weath
er. lie aleo received two or three , ilght cots or
scratches on the bead and face.
Mr. Oliphant is the newly appointed Secre
tary ,ol Legation, and had just arrived la the
steamer from Shanghae, end assumed the duties
of his Ude.. Mr. G. S. Morrison; Brldab Con
sul at Nagasaki, but it the time a gout of Mr.
Aloook, was out on the face, bat .not sarionsly
hart Mr. Wirgman, the ids - wallas artist at
tached to the London illustrated,Netoo, .was
also in the melee, ae mod, bat trooped with a
whole skin.
The - residence of the British Minister and
members of the Legation is situated near the
centre of the cat,. The house, was formerly
the residence of one of the PaiCain, the
ground and premises covering some ten or fif
teen acres, partly covered with large forest
trees, shrubbery, plants, dawentifith ponds,
race course, gymnasium, etc. The - houses are
trunrouuded by a well or Mace, entered through
gates, which are locked alter ten o'clock.
At thee, gates, also outside fed within the :
enclosure, some inriy or - fifty yeeknnines ere'
stationed to guard the Legs titio." These.vack s i
oniues (armed police) cern"- Oriole end two
swords, which are as sharp as ~razor, which
they use with great skill anA dexterity; they
use both band., so dm ohs hlogr:is enough to
strike off.the head. They evilegever the body,
at almost oue blow, ae in the trilliferf the Rev

Japanese cut down in the sircrtgtrif Yokohama
two years ago.
How these armed bandits pvite . k.t.lisi gates
and got 'tndo lire enclosure - ft .never been

trying to force their way into the house, when
be went to the room of Mr. Alto and gave
the alarm; this was about twedClock at

night. Mr. Alcock wont into the all, which

he found the lights partly out and a general
fightiroing on among the desperadoessritin had
broken in, tad thli guard, who beard the noise
and came rushing in to protect tlicir ma
ter. Weser.. Oliphant and Alorrison were
both in the hall, and had fired several pistol
ehote ; the first shot snook a =Ma nn the left
lode, who dropped down. The man had on
armor. When the guard came in, and the
fight became general, - Morruton and Oliphant
very wisely backed outand Int the Japansise
hare the fight ell to themselves. They both
bad Cult's revolvers; but to a partially dark
room, among Seize filtsen or ivrenty. yank°
nines using their short swords right nod left,
pistols were of little utle. It was when Mr.
Llitphnot was in the act of delet:ling himself,
by throwing up his nrm - to protect his bend,
that be received the cut on theb wrist n 1 his
right arm. - '
There worn five of the bindits killed, tome
halt dozen wounded, besides three that com
mitted hart-kart, and one taken prisoner, but
who-cannot be made to give the name, Id any
of his aninciaten, or make any (*.unionism's that
would lead to detection.
The guard behaved with great bravery, end
were highly complimented by Mr. Alcock the
next day. Ilea of the guArd was killed and
several cut and wounded.
The belief is universal that the attack was
made with the view, es I have said before, of
killing every member of the British Legation.
One of the rooms opening into the hall, occu
pied by Mr. Myberg, was entered and the bed
clothes and curtain. rut iota pieces, bpsiins
several stabs had been made through the mai
tre/a Foitunataly the room was dark, and no
one in the bed.
It im pretended that the Japanese have
morn to have the lila 01 Mr. Alrock in re
venge for his sacrilegious attempt lately to visit
the city of Miako, the residence of the Spirit
ual Emperor, t 5 which In. Excellency did Dot
succeed.
These are 11(1 people in the world ;Thrice re
ligious bate inad prejudice are stronger than
the Japanese, or Who remember or. instill
longer. They were very much opposed, and
tried hard to prevent Mr. Alcrck and hi. pirty
from visiting Fuel-Jame, which he did last fell.
lip to that time the loot of the Euionean hod
never profaned the sacred heights of Fain-
Jama, and for this unholy act the Japanese
have sworn to have his bead.
What court° the British Minister will poreoe
la regard to the late outrage is not publicly
known, and will not be until after the arrival
of the Admiral from Hong Kong, who is looked
for to-morrow. The Imperious (51) flag-ship
of Vice Admiral Hope, and throe other', will be
here. ICU believed that the English govern
ment in this cam will bold the' Japanese re
sponeible, at it samba etrange that so large a
party could move &beat in the centre of a city
like Jeddo without the gB►ernment being cogni
sant of it. If the Japanese government cannot
protect the foreign repreeentatives, then they
bad better withdraw to where their lives will be
safe. It is pretended that thew formerly he:
longed to the Prince of Milo, that they axe dis
carded followers of that Prince, and hays be-

The Pans corrospondent of the N. Y. Tones
writes :
When the subjects of the Southern Confed
eracy in France wink to travel through Europe,
and go to the Prefect of Patine at Paris to get
their passports tired, the officer directs them,
as heretofore, to go to the American Consul ;
if the individual says that the American Con
sul demands an oath of allegiance, which he
is unwilling to take, the officer replies; ; "But
you tend go and see if' the Consul refuses you,
and it he does, return hare, and I will vise
your passport: , When the individual returns
the cue is given, the words used being ...Bon

Thus the Prefect of Police, in providing for
an emergency, recognizes the independence
of the Southern Confederacy.
