has been interrupted by the destruction
of the bridge. Crossing this stream,
which is about two hundred feet in width
4, and three feet deep it the ford, near the
bridge' lately burned, a good road leads
thief:A *level country for two miles to
lbot of anriel of Wile known as Hut=
thiligh's Hills. Their ascent is of the
raokrugged character. The railroad fol.
lows a little stream called Clear Creek;
erossing it abmit half way tip the ascent
by trestle work,--ninety feet high ;
;Or stn,it again crosses a small tributary
to Clear Creek, and passing through a

~Tunnel Hillis the last of a series form

the north it presents many advantages; '

whole railroad line. Four. miles from
Tunnel Hill, Elizabethtown, the advance
'of the United States forces, is ruched.
This is_ an old and rather dilapidated

Who pea resident of that town. The Reb

should should their attempts on Louisville fail.
Holin Creek it the first stream of any
importance south of Elizabethtown on the
line of the railroad. It is at all times
fordable, the rail and turnpike nada cross
ing it near its headwaters. • 'I hence to
Green river the . country is a plain, level
award of rich country—well watered and
producing plenty. 'fbe country imme

rough and poor. The banks of the river
at, the point crossed , by the railroad are
very steep. The turnpike road, crossing
thv river at lilunfordsville, winds down a
.steep . declivity, and all the vehicles cross
n
the eer by , boat. The stream here is
seldom fordable, is exceedingly swift
and dangerous. Beyond Green river and
extending to Barren river are the barrens

Scrofula, or King's Evil,
is a constitutional disease, a corruption a
of the
blood, by which this fluid becomes vitiated,
weak, and poor. Being in. the circulation, it
pervades tie whole body, and may burst, out
in disease on any part of IL No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The setofulous taint is variously
caused by mercurial_ disease, low living, dis
ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, filth
and filthy habits, the d g vices, rind,
above all, by the venerealinfection. What
ever be its origin, it is hereditary in the con
stitution, &scolding 4. from parents to.children
unto the third and fourth generation ; indeed,
it seems to be the rod of Him who says, ..I
will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon
their children."
Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands, swellings; and on
the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul eor
motion, which genders in the blood, depresses
the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitu
tions not only suffer from scrofulous com
plaints,. but they have far less power to with
stand the attacks of other disease;; conse
quently vast numbers perish by disorders
which, although Hot scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered fatal' by this taint in the
System. t Most of the consumption width de
cimates the human family has its-origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination. ' , and many
destructive diseases of the liver; kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of ail the organs, arise from at
are aggravated . by, the same cause.
One quarter of all our people are scrofulous ;
their persons are invaded by this lurking in
fection, and their. health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it front the system we must senovate
the blood by an alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine' we supply in
AYER'S
Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most effectual remedy which the medical
skill of our times can devise for, this every
where prevailing and fatal malady. It is com
bined from the most active remedial" that have
been discovered for the expurgation of this foul
disorder from the-blood, and the-rescue of the
system from its destructive consequences.
