They report, that they were captured

into baggage cars with other prisoners as
full as they could stand.
. .
At Richmond they were put into the
Ouzo ;factory or prison hospital. There
the Confederate surgeons, as might be ex.
liected, attendedto the rebel wounded first,
and afterwards to pnr own men, who were
not, however, treated with any undue
seventy of practice. The rebel surgeons
in general, is may unfortunately be re
marked of many who attended our own
regiments, are Singularly incompetent, and

creased, the same reckless love of carving
for carving's sake, which is to often mani

Many limbs were sacrificed by the knife,
simply on account of comminuted fractures,
where they might easily havobeen saved,
and many more were allowed to remain

• S .gularly enough, neither in the gen
era, nor the prison hospitals did any cases
°near after the store Bridge battle of high
inflammatory affections supervening upon
wounds. There was no orysipelas—no
hospital gangrene. 'All the deaths occurred
rather from low than high inflammation.
It wars common practice for the rebel
sentries to fire at the windows of the
prison containing the loyal captives. Ono
man, already mentioned in our despatches,
was, killed in this way—another was se
riously wounded through the leg, without
even putticg his head out of the window.
The climax of barbarity was; however,
reached when the sentry fired into the
window. of the hospital. Fortunately no
one was killed, but the hall passed' three
feet over the head of the dying bed of one
of our wounded, and went oat at the' ward
door behind him. After these little es
capades of the sentries, an officer generally
came over from Biattregard to tell the sur

In one ward a single Optician was left
to take care (without assistance) of - more
than one hundred and fifty patients.
Lint, bandages, sponges, all hospital ap
pliances were very scant, blit in general
were shared - between the rebel and Union
wounded with More generosity than might
have been empec.ed.
, 401 IN BBECECINRIDGE A "K. G. C."—
The precipitate flight of John C. Brock
inridge, without apparent cause, is fully
explained by a letter from Paducah; Ky.,
in the New York Herald. The letter
antes that when the Federal troops took
posses ion of Paducah, a "castle" of the K.
C.'o was seized, wherein were found
some important documents. The writer
states :
"Among Unfit are letters catefully filed
from Governor Beriah Manoffin, Senator
John C. Breckinriige, Gen.'Gideon J. Pil
low, Gen. Buckner, Mr. — Representative
Burnett and others, all of whom are thus
proved to have been members of this trea
sonable league, .and many of them • file
leaderi in the movement. A copy of the
proceedings of three meetings of the Na
tional Castle was found, which lets in W
ere rays of light upon tha strange conduct
of Governors Harris, Jackson and Ma
goffin, and the breaking up of the Chsrlea T
ton Convention ; letter—or, rather private
circular—from two members of Mr. Bu
chanan's Cabinet, while yet in office, sta
ting the 'number end quantity of arms
which would be in the Southern States
at the expiration of their term of 'office,
and other inforthation which will be of use
when the rebellion is emitted."
The seizure of these documents was
kept secret until ,several of the 'traitors
had bean arrested. Three. of them are
now in Fort LsGiyisite. Breckinridgo got
wind of his danger in season to escape,
which is a great pity.
