James Mackerel!, alias "Curly," is a well
known cue hero—haling been raised in this
city. He was sentenced one year and sin
months, and hie term would hare expired May
17th, 1862. He is a stout, heavy set man,
twenty-lour years of iike; with thick curly
hair, and a,machioist by trade. He had been
in the shop with Mr. Oiterson a few. min
utes before bis escape, and took. some.bolts
up to the roof, evidently being aware of the
intention of the others.
John Boyd is a -atone cutter by trade, five
feet Nis beheads bight, rather dark complex
ion, aubam hair, blue eyes, and twenty-five
year,. of age. He has the initials "3. B.”
pricked on his right arm in India ink., He was
committed for two years and eleven months,
from Warren county.. Hie time ran till Nov.
8,1868.
These men were employed outside for their.
practical skill, and because they could be en
gaged there to better advantage than in their
cells.
Eines writing the above, we learn that both
Boyd and Mockersll were arrested together,
about dusk, at a point ca Batcher.s Run two
and a half miles from the city. They ha d been
followed by boye, who kept op a hoe and cry
at their heels, which attracted the attention of
a couple of fanners who immediately took`
them into custody. One of the fegitives drew
a shoe knife and attimpted• tti use it, but wax
soon overpowered. They were placed in a
wagon and conveyed back to the prison, much
to the gratification of the Waiden, who will
keep teem — in close confinement until their
terms tapirs. r, •

Conddecable excitement existed in Lawrence
villa during Wednesday, in consequenoe of the
discharge of two hundred boys who had been
employed in the United Slates Annual in
