We notice that several of our Southern

Hampton was a lovely village, lying three

Nearly, if not quite, haired the residents were

struction our picket guards were stationed
along the run, a stream perhaps two hundred
feet wide, in some parts more. They clearly
saw the vandal hordes applyingthe torch, and
running from house to house with combustible
materials.
From the rapidity of the fire they supposed
the rebels to be using turpentine, oils and tar.
An attempt was made by - them to born the
bridge, which would have been auccesefol had
not our troops fired i - upon them. At Fortress
Monroe the belief was quite commie, at first,
that Gen. Batter had ordered the fines of the
'town, and was only corrected, among the
troops and laboreri there. by the Union ;gu

approach of Magruder with his taiga force was
not known or expected, hence the first im

Ir is now thought that Pillow is not moving
in force on Bird's Poled, bat is moving to rein
force McCulloch and also on Ironton, and if
successful, to strike at St. /OWL The battle
between Lyon end McCulloch dashes his
hopes in that direction, though there is no
doubt that his main bodies bate moved in
those directions. Re has fallen into the trap,
and the federal forces will yet catch hlm. The
most active movements were going on at Bird'.
Point yesterday. The fort, fications us being
rapidly completed. Late ip the evening an
order was received from Gee. Fremont to
move lour regiments from Bird's Point by
steamers to Herculaneum, a poN.sbout thirty
miles below St. Louis, in order to reinforce
Bland's and Lyon's forces. The Uncle Sam,
the D. A. January 'and Rob' Roy are the
steamers. The regiments ordered off are Col:
?urchin's, Col. Wallace, 001. Dougherty and
Col. Lawler, it lam correctly informed. They
start early this morning.
From this indication from headquarters of
General Fremont, and doubtless he is well in
formed, the enemy will make no formidable
demonstration on Bird's Point, but we expect
plenty of skirmishing.
ROLLL,TFIIIIIIDAY, August 16, 1861.
All is military , parade and bustle here at
present. Two Illinois regiments—the Four.
tenth, under Col. Palmer and th e Fifteenth,
under Col, Turner—arrived yesterday after.
noon. They Marched tardily for their camp,
about four and a hall miles West, to Penwell'.
Spring, at the Junction of the Little Piney
and Big Beaver where excellent water is
found.—St. Louie Evening hews.
Are We Prepared 1
WaNneirron, Saturday, August 17, 1861.
All the talk and all the apparent movements
on the part of the Rebels toward a direct at
tack upon Washington, about which there is
mach anxiety and excitement, are merely feints
to cover Davm's real purpose. That purpose
is the closing of the lower Potomac, and the
throwing of a strong army across the river into
St. Mary and Charles counties, both of which
are out-and-out Secession in sentiment, Thin
done, they will march up
, to Annapolis and
shut offf that route also, leaving only the Balti
more Railroad open to the Government, and
that can be dosed at a moment's notice by a
midnight foray upon the bridges, as the Kane
conspirators proved to our cost.
This Is the real design of the Rebels, and he
soon as they get a few more secreted batteries
along the neer, they will attempt to put it into
execution. Once established in Maryland,
they count upon a formidable rising of the se
cessionirts of that State, and the investment
l ot Washington with almost a certainty of enc.
1 CUM
Rely upon it, the Capitol isnot oat of danger,
nor will any amount of secrecy as to army
movemeull, however jedicious such a coos,
may be, improve the matter. The Rebel force
in Virginia outnumbers oars, and it is daily in
creasing. Is our augmentation going on at the
proper speed, or are we on every occasion io
