The Leavenworth; Kansas, Daly Tunes,
of the 9th instantatives the following ac
count of some outrageous recuedings of a
band of secessionists,and Indians in South
ern Smits :
'Avery. T. Spencer arrived bare
last evening, from Allen county; this State.
He left, Allen county on Tuesday, for the
purpose of procuring on,
'for the
settlers on the Neutral Indian. Lands, in
Southern Kansas, who are now being driv
en out and murdered by a band of some
'dye hundred secessionists and Cherokees,
under command of one John .31atthevra,
formerly a trader among the Osage Indi
ans.
"Mr. Spencer informs us that this Mat
thews has driven the settlers off the neu
tral lands, and also off a strip of govern
ment land, three miles wide, , below the
mental lands, hanging and usitingsome
Sixteen of them t besides taking everything
-from them that he possibly *kid. Sixty
fimilies of the settlers have taken refuge
in Humboldt, - Allen county, and Leroy,
Coffey county. Matthews also took
twenty prisoners at one time, but through
the influence of 'Captain Miller, of the
Cherokee. Ration, they were set at liberty.
He made the threat to the prisoners that
he would born Humboldt and Osage Mis
sion in less than a week. The band alio
took some forty horses from the settlers
on Lightning Creek- The band is well
armed with. Titles and revolvers, and their
only object appears to be 'Plunder. •
