THURSDAY MORNING, JULY 18, 1861
Westarn VtrStore Free
Tberei are few pages ino,loo4llot patriotic
. warfain so brilliant as that Thick, has just been
written of (be rapid and victorious career of
Gen, McClellan in Western Virginia. With his
brave western troops, be entered upon his great
campaign, and pushed on over mountain and
Talley, 'grasping all before him, nattering the
well entrenotted braggarts like so many sheep,
killing • few and causing ► great many to run.
Finally be encruntrred the main tone at Cet i .
rack's Ford, under the command of Geo. Gar
net; a yell-trained soldier ; but be could no
worimithetaad the aseacilt than did soy of the
other,; -dud while be was vainly endeavoring to
rani hidpania 'Woken forced, was shot dead
by one of the Wiens soldiers. The death of
Garnet ended the vier west of the Alleghenies,
and at this'moment Western Virginia is aimed
as seenre .- from_alarms of war and the terrorism
of treason as Pennsylvania.
Gana' was a traitor. He deserted the ear
vice of the, government which gave him an edu
listion, and advanced hiatto.high rank in Reser
vice,--a government which he served tai hfully
for tit*lienyeare;—but ihe wretched heresy, so
prevalent among Southern men, that he owed a
higher featly to his native state than to his su
preme-government, led him into the shinny
crusade in-which he lost his life. Ile richly
merited his fate ; yet thousands of his loyal
- countryinen will , sigh aT the news-of his fall,
and call to mind the - words of lorsel'e Ring—
" Died Abner be a fool diethr Toe. tender re
speotzshOwn to his remains, and their return to
his family in Richmond, was a worthy finale of
this greet triumph.
Now Gen. McClellan is ready to no operate
with Gen. Patterson la the Central valley, which
will probably be carried without any fighting,
and thence both will masa the Blue Ridge.
. Then we may look for a simaltanecnie movement
by the font great lines under Major Generale
McClellan, Patterson, McDowell and Butler,
who will be enabled to enolle the entire
secession; force in Eastern Virginia. Should
they retreat to their fortifications around Rich
mond, which is probable, the Unieu forces can
shut them - in, and cut off theirceuppllec, and
thus compel a surrender; or they may reduce
them by a series of assaults. As Gen. Scott is
not a preelpitate soldier, and as he is very me
fill of the lives of hie men, we are persuaded
that he will prefer to Ant them up and reduce
them by starvation, to the more summary pro
ceas of abattle or eeige. It is true that In the
ektremitY to which they will soon be reduced
Davis evil Buttressed may feel bound to risk '
a - general battle, and if they offer it Gen. Scott
cannot a>•oid socepting it; but after what we
hive seen the past few days of the prowess of
the ..chivalry," there can be but little doubt as
a the result., If Garnet was unable to make
the poor wretches he hid node, him stand be
fore two or three regiments, what chance have
they to grapple with the cocceutrated and dis
ciplined hosts of the North, flashed with vic
tory, aid eager Tor the fray. Bat, battle or no
battle, the overthrow of rebellion seems to be
near at hand.
There is something very strange in the tact
that the' Southern troops cannot or will not
fight. -1 Ehlers the war began, the Southern
orators and presets confidently predicted that
- their men were able in conquer the men of the
• .North two to one, three to one,-rive to one; but
experience hie shown that exactly the reverse
is thi fats— Botnebody remarked, recently, that
although One Northern man could fight. five
Southerners, yet it dove require five Northern
mento each ode of them. Whatever may be
esid of ,their fighting,-certain it is they= well.
In the Mexican war the Men of the South were
good soldiers; but they were volunteers, and
were fighting for their country, or at least in its
genital! bit it Ls now clear that many of the
unfortedtate men shoats arrayed under the ban
: net of stioeseitm are not voltastem. They are
there by constraint.---They bad to enlist or
states, it be &band, or perhaps shot. We asked
one of our soldiers who had been in the affair
• 0 Philiippa how he accounted for the extreme
cowardice of the secession troops. "Why, what.
have they to fight for L" was hits emphatic reply.
—Sties writing the foregoing, we have news
of Gen. Patterson's adeance toward, Winches
ter, in 'the Central or Shenandoah valley. We
were correct in out anticipations. The grand
campaign will soon be intensely interesting.
.Siothleg to Wear:.
The Me hada.
2110 N. Y. u World thus treats of the
blockade — in a vein of , ively cruelty that we
would hardly suppiie could indulge in :.
„The blockade of the Southern 'ports his al
read, y imparted en excessive stringency to the
local markets. There is a scarcity of salt,
soap and-saleratus, which threaten the direst
results. As a rule, every man desires to save
his bacon. How is this conservation of ham
to be compassed without salt ? The personal
pig of every denizen of the tropics is wiper-.
lied. The dearth of soap is not of so much
consequence. At the worst, the southern sk
dermis will not be so dirty as its behavior.
As to the famine of pearlash, consumers may
substitute for it the ashes of their hopes, of
which they bid fair presently to have a plenti
ful supply.
There is a paucity of 'boots likewise. The
bunions of the populace are unclad. Leather
is a tradition. Acids, with the exception of
those which are conversational, are exhausted.
Light fabrics and light literature are gone
out together. The alluring hebdomadal crop.
tree, with cuts, no longer elicits the nimble
dim of the literate by-passer. The beer tap
is dry, and the publican yawns amid his
vacuous cups. The dearth is, in fact, univer
sal. But the specific impoverishment which
bids fair to occasion the most devastating re
sults is that of the article of paper. Its
effect upon etiuthern journalism is already
ludicrously apparent. Many publications
have died outright; not a few have mitigated
their proportiomi, by way of making two bites
of the cherry of dissolution, while the re
mainder are in pathetic spasms of moribund
agony. They gill doubtless all go down
together erelong. Some of the most riotously
vital may' sustain a transitory animation by
printing their issues upon eleemosynary hand
kerchiefs and nightgowns, but even this re- ,
some has its limit. What remains beyond
this expedient we really do not see. Possibly
the impression might be struck off upon the
back of the principal editor, and he valorously
do bulletin duty in the public square. But
even. this primitive exigence has its draw
backs and inconveniences. The bulletin board
would be likely to withdraw at intervals,
from
_its instructive post of - duty. There is
clearly no hope for it. Southern journalism
must go down, It has already outlived its
time and function, awl we are not - going to;
shed tears over its -decadence. There has.
been, wi!hin a generation, little in its style of
temper calculated to inspire a wish for. US'
continuance. It has lied a good deal, and to
dusastreus purpose ; and' there is something
righteously retributive its extinction from'
the face of the earth.
liitittnaky wad the B.eboUlon.
A correspondent, writing front Louisville to
he Cincinnati "Gazette," says
This city is the scene of continual bustle,
though them is little business. There is a eon
tinuel passing and connterpassing of gentlemen.
from below, and =lncas tetes-tetes of treason,'
which meet one's observation at every corner,:
causing loyal men to shudder as they would at;
a serpent's head throat from the wall of their
bed-room.. The conspirators are yearning over
Kentucky as the hyena yearns over a few
made grave. It is very plain that men are pass
ing through Louisville in considerable numbers,
to - join the rebels at the Tennessee line, and I sin
far from regarding as mere sensation the letter
from which the "Journal" makes an extract, de , t
daring that the Secessionists are laboring to ,
concentrate a large force on or near the rebel'
line, and that at the proper time it will be need
in an attempt to coerce the State into the
whirlpool of Southern madness.
There may be reason lorArawing a 'Secession
army out of Kentucky to the Tennessee border.
The bold Union men of East Tennessee have
written that upon the wall which terrifies the
little tyrant, Governor Barris. His teeth
chatter and his knees unite together. His
soothsayers can giro him no comfort; so he is
moving off 'Soldiers from Camp Cheatham, to
be transported to East Tennessee by the Chat.
tanooga Railroad. With these, I suppose, he,
hopes to subjugate the brave mountaineers.'
When they begin it, God bare mercy on their'
souls t The East Tennesseans are not of that .
style. Before they will submit to the usurpa.
tion, they will fill up their mountain gorges
with carcasses and send their rippling streams to
the Cnruberland crimson with Secemion blood..
By the way, how delightful would the effect
be, upon both Kentucky and E ast Tennessee, if
the campaign should just now begin in earnest
—it. Scott were to gain one or two important
victories, and send the rebels in both Eastern
arid Western Virginia, howling toward Rich
mond. Theo, all their attention would be drawn
to Memphis, 133 far as Tennessee's concerned. ,
They would have leisure neither to coerce East
Tennessee, nor to plot against the liberties of
Kentucky." One or two decisive actions will
throw Memphis into a panic of consternation,
Her people - Ted in the work of precipitating
Terusessee, and their consciences have made
them cowardly ever since. The tyrants don't
feel secure in Nashville, even. They are stand.
log on the necks of freemen whom they dread,
and whom they would murder, if they had but
enough of Lady Macbeths to stimulate their
courage.
