refreshes its readers with the decidedly pleasant

from that delectable correspondent:
The occasion in highly favorable far the capture

question is, can they afford to incur any ecotone

importance; and the capture of =which would in

could not btappropriated to the use of the army.
Indeed, I suppose it Is with a full knowledgnol

Alter quoting this specimen of the Bragpubool
of letter-writing, u practised in Richmond for the
behdof ofthe Egyptian city of Tennessee, we are
tempted to quote a certain Yankee in reply, who
has written a letter from quite a different stand
point than Richmond affords—and probably a much
better one (or considering the safety or the danger
of Washington at present. "There has been,"
says' thia correspondent, "great danger that the
conspiracy would gain some important advantage
over our government while it was is a disorganized
state; but that i puked. Now,l can liken the
war only to that between the enraged bull and the
locomotive. The natural brute is acre to get the
worn of it, while with caution and a cow-catcher,
the artificial will convert its antagonist into harm
less beef with no material damage to itself." •
Col. .I. , rauz Sigel and the Loyal German
Troops to Missouri.
The latest reports from Colonel Sigel's cons.
mend irildissomi are that he had surrounded
the rebels at Carthage, but was kited tb with
draw his forces to the, adjacent woods in con
sequence of the overwhelming numbers of the
enemy. lie gradually felt back to Mount
Vernon, keeping the rebels at bay by . incessant
discharges of his artillery, and covermehis re.
trogade movement Twith consummate skill that
his loss "was trilling. The reinforcements
which marched to• his relief have probably
reached him before this time, and we shall un
doubtedly soon hear of a decided movement
against the rebels with "sufficient force.
Colonel FA= Sigel, the officer who com
manded the federal troops in this engsgeneint,
is one of the beat officers in the service of the
government. Ho is not only a brave man, bet
a practizil and experienced soldier. In the
revolution of 1848 be was commander of
the republican forces in the Grand Duchy of
Baden, under the provisional government of
Hecker, Struve and Protano, and conducted
the campaign with gre at skill. The insur
rection having been finally suppressed by the
Prussian itimy, - ,Sigel made his escape to this
country, where Becker and other of his core
patriots also found refuge.
For several years past Colonel Sigel has re
sided in St. Louie, and on the that call of the
Presictenefor troops to defend the government
against the machinations of the rebels, he
stantly entered the field, raising a regiment of
German troops in St. Louis. Hecker, his
former superior, left his pleasant home in 11...
limits, with his son, and both entered as priL
rates in Eigeln regiment, This prompt and
patriotic movement of tho'German population
fired fhb emulation of their fialcrarcounkrymen
In Illinois ; who immediately organized a Tager
regiment in that litate,.and sant for lier.ker to
become their commander. At first Hecker
declined the offer of a command, declaring
that he had no higher aspiration than to serve
as a private under his old liieruilligel, in whom
be had more confidence than in Mosel( ; but,
yielding to continued solicitation, procured his
dismissal from SigePs regiment and proceeded
to Illinois to assume the colonelcy of the ds ,
gets. This regiment , is ndw encamped near
Alton, Illinois
Colonel Sigel is comparatively a young man,
but his attire military life and the experience
gained li European warfare eminently fit him
for the command in which he- has already
given proof of rare ability and singular cool
ness in the hour of danger. He will be fre
quently heard from in.this campaign.
It is an interesting fact in connection With
his history that he was earnestly solicited to
take the command of a German brigade in
New York city, but declined, alleging as a
reason that there was a hexed field of opera
tions fn Missouri, and that he could be more
useful there than elsewhere. He preferred to
adhere to his comrades in the ranks of the
loyal Germans of St. Louis rather than leave
them, assured that they were the men to give
excellent Recounts of themselves. ,Luis judg
ment is confirmed by the admirable steadiness
of his soldiers in the recent affair at Carthage. ,
The Three Months , Volunteers
Ono of our caempomries very properly re
marks that any nervousness, such as sorniiimea
showe itself of late, in reference to the approach
of the expiration of the term of the en.
listment of these volunteers, is guile. un
called for, as the great mass of the three
months , men are willing to go for the war.
AU they ask is a recess at the end of their term,
and many are willing to do without that.
When we remember the action of the boys at
Camp Dennison, when they came to the point,
whether to go home or for the war, we can not
doubt the immediate reenlistment for the war
orthe great :moss of the three months , men.
At least sixty-tive out of the eighty thousand
of them in the field will see the end, and be in
at the death of Secession. Baader', if the three
months , regiments at Washington should be in
formed next week that they were wanted for
thirty days, to go to Richmond, they would bail
the intelligence with a shout of joy.
In reference to this subject we find the fol.
lowing in the Washington correspundeace of the
Philadelphia oPress
Qulte an effort Is making by experienced mil
itary men to induce the three months , vol
unteeavat. the expiration of their term, to
reenlist for the war. :These troops have t been
admirably disciplined, and will constitute spice•

dently expected that a majority are ready to
remain in the service ander new commanders.
