• Mom the LOU4DU Time, JUDO 25.
It is 'only by! a providential circumstance
that we have been spared the duty of meld
ing one of the' most terrible calamities; by
which a great city can be visited. There
was a moment on Seturday evening when it
seemed possible that the great fire of Lon
don might occur over again; and, iedeed, it
was not owing to any resources of modern
times that this catastrophe was escaped: Our
reports of the cenflagration will have shown
how pole:I:less wore all our inventions against
the fury of the flames. Bad the , wind been
high, or had it blown steadily away from the
river in the direotionef the town, it is im;:tos
tibia to say whit might have been the fate of
the southern portion of the metropolis. The
least • that could - Wm happened must have
been destsuction over a vast area and pro.
tection for the rest of the city at the cost of a
cierleof ruins. _.l3y blowingup belts of houses
at proper distabees the flames might have
been confined ;I within certain limits, ,' hut
notbieg short of that - desperate operation
would have given us security. The area ie.
comes the more impressive: when we observe
that eierythingi apparently, was in our favor
when the. Oro began, and that it asserted, ',
nevertheless, its alusalute mastery before five
hours bad passed. . i •
11 was not in thrldead of the night, bed on
a summer aftcrivion; that the fire brigade In
Watling street! was summoned to Cotton's
wharf, close to Loudon bridge, on the &nth

by thSchiel o brigade in person, were
quickly en the spo t, when it vas found th at
a fire had bra n out in the:first story of a
warehouse. • The blinding was perfectly new,
and construcnd on approved principles of
architecture; strong party walls, provided
with iron doors, divided the fabric, and the
warehouses in the vicinity were reputed to bo
firepropf also. LThe place had not been aban
doned forthe night; the workmen wens :still
on the spot„ and ono of them actually discov
ered a email heap of smoking hemp the
germ of that conflagration which before mid
night was represented by three acres of fliine.
Qatpppily,..ehei smoke at that early period
protected the elm. - So dense were its volumes
as to forbid appeoich, and the Italia was
left to do its work.. MI there was sweet ar

true state of the ease, and predicted from his

A few minutes later, as ho was placing hie men

it depended simply on the force and dierictioal
of the wind how mach of Southward might
be left standing on Monday morning. 1
Providentially, the ..night was, tabu; yet
every' now and then, when a little • gust came
up the river, the redoubled roar of the flames
and the ftakei of Pro launched into the Seines
