It may serve a good Purpose I to remind (Lim re•

this country contributed - is much to elevation
of the present administration to power as did the
Tribune; and that wheir such as he were engaged
in the dirty and 'rniechievious business of endeav-:-.

sorts of ficonipromiseff dodger, the Tribune
stood faithful aprifirm. Who of the readers °Ube
Chronicle has yet threaten or ceased. to smile in
derision at the recollection of tho series of articles
put forth by'its editor with an air of impottruieii
and gratity irresistibly ludicrous, pointing to new
compromises and surrenders as the only means of
saving the country. , The zeal

like that of its present crimson', is that Which
springs from the COURCIOIIIIMIS of 'duty and genuine
lore of country; and its indignation it even the

not hesitate to find utterance, and, if needs be, to
drag the wavernrofficial, however' high his sta

has labored 'ton long and earnestly to lag behind
now, or to tamely vutimit to see the verdict of the

Instead of pitiful flings et the editors of the Tri

No Mere Sawdust.
An honest country gentleman once gave it
as his opinion, in the British House of Com
mons, that Sir Robert Peel "was not that kind
of man that you could easily sprinkle salt on
his tail." We trust Lieutenant-General Scott
will not think it disrespectful if we suggest to
various newspaper correspondents and critics
that he also is a tolerably old bird, and not to
be caught with every kind of chaff
To read and believe the halt of the many
statements which appear in the journals would
soon bring one to the unhappy conviction that
the different army corps east and wearar - e act
ing in entire independence of each . other, and
that every Major-General and Brigadier is par
,
rasing hie share of the campaign as seems to bins
best, without reference to any general plan or
responsibility to any Commander-in•ChieL
Some days ago the public was startled by a
&Wont statement from Louisville that Gener
al McClellan bad made what seemed a very .
Molds contract with the traitorous' Kentucky
authorities, 'sod at once several journals opened
their batteries upon him, and threw such a
storm of one hundred and twenty pounder
shells into the poor General's camp as was
thought Likely to damage him severely. Bat
yesterday we learned from him that the Ken
tucky authorities bad made a statement which
had no foundation in fact, and that he had made
no such agreement as was given out. Where
upon it may be said that these journalistic
bombs did no harm—being filled with sawdust,
as were soma others recently fired on the Poto
mac.
General McClellan having cleared his skirts,
the tarn is now with General Patterson. Let-
Ws-writers do not hesitate to say that he is an
imbecile, and that bat for his ' , unaccountable
•refusal to act" the rebel General, Johnson,
would ere this have been annihilated. A few
days ago it was General qadwalader who was
to blame for inactivity, and who had let the
rebels slip between his fingers.
A bombshell filled with sawdust is. not
thought by old campaigners a very dangerous
missile, which may account for the neglect with
which General Scott repays the kind attentions
and instructions of the letter-writers. But
even sawdust bombs may annoy a commander
in-chiet, who has something else to do than
dodge them, and whose head—not being so
thick as newspaper correspondents.'—cannot
stand everything. Wherefore, It may be as
well, it ehells mast be thrown, to nee only such
ms will really explode. In other words, it is but
fair that when an army letter-writer wants to
grumble, be should first be sate of his grievance.
Else readers will begin to think, by and by,
that the correspondent does not, alter nU,
know so much as the Commander-in-Chief.—

Death of Charlotte Bronte's Fattier
Charlotte \ Bronte's Labor is dead. On the
7th of Jime ho fell asleep in the wearied old
parsonage of Haworth, closing his oyes on
the hearthstone where the thfeo lovely wo
men who made his name glorious sat but •
little while ago, dreaming inscrutably over
the wonderful world within them, and whence
they passed one by one, their fragile shapes
seeming rather to fade - slowly than die
quickly, like the common lot. Eighty-four
years old, and, but . for that faithful son-in
law Nicholls, who looks to us in reading of
him more like a pmtriction of Charlotte's
life than a separate enstence—but for him
and the servant; all alone ! We may be
lieve or disbelieve the stories of his iron
firmness ; ho may hare fired himself off in
pistol cartridges . from' the back door steps;
he may have torn taffeta gowns; ho may
have been a gloomy companion for three
motherless women, and a gifted, reckless, um,.
balanced eon—we forget all that now. lie
outlived one of the rarest families that wore
everbom to man.
All that we know of him is known because
he was the father of Craver, Acton, and Ellis
Bell, of Patrick the younger, dead in his des
pairing youth, after a - life of wild, brilliant
misery, for which no philosopher in the tangled
oriu&ni„, of mcrbkl nature could dream of
holding him responsible. The Bev. Patrick
Bronte was born on the Saint's day which
gave him his name, in the year 1777. A brief
bat unutterably fascinating l&tory, with an
end which sickened us, but making us still
more glad. It is impossible to feel overbalanc
ing regret at the death of the last Bronte.
Vire rejoice that there is none living_to bear
that name which always meant misery and
spiritual unhealth, while it portended genius
and glory. It is as if we SW a galaxy of
glorious stars, and knew that while they shone
-y were - burning in a bitter conscious pain.
"a might sorrow for ourselves when they
dimmed and went out in white ashes • but for their sake we should rejoice. It is a lenificent
law of nature that no morbid growth, how
ever splendid, propagates itself through gen
erations of unhealth and agony. And we
would have no more of tho Brontea left us
than dwells .in their immortal hooka—Pi. Y.
