Henry Giles on Beauregardta Ignorance
Henry Giles has written i letter to the
Christian Broker, commenting on Beanie.
gar d's recent - proclamation, and defending the
character of the loyal troops engaged in this
war against. rebellion. When he refers to
Beauregard's style { of speaking of these sol
.
diets of the nation as ','ruerceraties," he deals
such merciless blows at his ignorance as
the following :
"If the mighty Bean can - fight no better
than he writes, Gen. Scott might as well have
Bean Brnmmel or Bean Nash for an opponent.
'Lour military . Beau were not as ignorant of
i
history as he s of grammar he would know
that what he calls 'an armed rabble' have of
ten done wonders in battle.
"And what was Beauregard himself, while
he was respectable, and before he became ig
nominious, but a 'disciplined mercenary'—
disciplined at the people's cost, and paid with
the people's money—the swprn hireling of the
Government which he has betrayed 2 And
now that he is vile, what is he still, but &per
jured mercenary ? Will he serve for nothing?
Does Jeff. Davis hold out no hopes of pay to
his fighters ? Why then does this Bellin
ger:l talk of 'mercenaries?'"
After more of this rough handling, our let
ter-writer has got a proposition to make, and an
tatericsl associate for Beauregard, neither of
hick will be acceptable to that gentleman :
"If Jeff. Davis and Beauregard wish to save
the country from bloodshed, I suggest a method
of deciding the quarrel which would be harm
less and at the same time interening and
amusing. Appoint a day and place. • Let a
hundred thousand on each side come front to
front. Let them first look fiercely at each
other, then shake bands, and then, by mutual
consent stack their arms. Open then huge
books like the registers of hotels, and let that
army be considered victorious eel of which the
maim norther can sign their'names.
"Will the Email submit to this literary
duel ? Or, as they 11138121310 to be chivalry of
the modern world, do they, like the knights
of old, think it beneath the dignity of gentle
men to learn the art of writing? Suppose,
then, that we choose the reading-ordeal. I
shall take Beauregard's letter to "deer W. E.
id artin." and after All on both sides have tried
to read it, I will give op your cause if any man
on either side can find in. it sense, grammar,
decency or thought But possibly in this as
in other cases, extremes mesh and that the
army el the southern chivalry despise both
reading and writing as heartily as Jack Cade
and his ragged hordes did.
Jack Cade objected to writing, in his day,
because it must be done on parchment. 'ls
not ibis a lamentable thing,' said he, 'that an
innocent lamb should be made parchment ?'
Perhaps the southern leaders object to writ
ing because it is done on paper ; because it
savors of New England manufacture, of com
mon schools, of plebeianism and Puritanism.
The same may be said of reading as of writ
ing, and Jack Carlo hated botn. He hated
payer also. He tells his mind to Lord Mor
timer with southern energy. ?diner Davis or
Mister Beauregard could not be more em
phatic. '1 hou hest: he says, 'most traitor
ously corrupted the youth of this realm, in
erecting a grammar school ; and whereas our I
forefathers had no other books but the score
and tally, thou haet caused printing to be used;
and contrary to the King, his crown and :dig
city,
.thou halt &paper-urn It will be
proved to thy.fice that thou bast men about
thee that usually talk of a noun and a verb
and such abominable words as no Christian
ear can endure to hear:* -It is very likely
that Union generals will have in their ranks
great numbers who can talk intelligently of
such abominable words as nouns and verbs, a
nuisance from which secession generals will
be very extensively and, to them, pleasantly
free."
The Youngertilajor General
If large calif) talents, joined to thorough
education and' in added opportunity, with years
for the play of all, give assurance of the growth
and distinction of a man, Gen, George B. Mc-
Clellan has the proudest future before him of
any man now upon the field of active life In
America. He it the youngest of the major
generals in the federal army, being only 35, and
ranks next Cs Oen. Scott, who. Is twice his age,
and perhaps ia the youngest man who ever ob
tained so high a position in our history. His
father was of Connecticut birth, a graduate of
Yale College, and an eminent physician in
Philadelphia. The son graduated at West
Point, in 1846, at the age of twenty, and came
out of the Mexican war four -years after a cap
tain. lie served in the engineers' corps, and
afterwards in the cavalry, and rose to the
rank of major in 1855- Then he went to
Europe and visited the Crimea, by order
of the government, and prepared on hie re
turn a valuable report on the European war of
that time, the' -Crimean campaign, and the or
ganixatioo of foreign armies Life in the army
was too dull for his active, ambitious mind, and
he resigned in 1857, and became vice-prendent
and active manager of the Illinois Central
Railroad, residing at Chicago. This pout he
held till last summer, when he resigned it to ac
cept the presidency and general superintenden
cy of the -Ohio and Mississippi Railroad ,(01n
einneti and St. Louis) wherettie civil war lotted
him a ready volunteer, and he returned to the
army, whichhe left a major, after an absence of
four years, springing into major generalship.
His choice personal and military accomplish
ments only - forbid his old comrades looking with
envy upon his rapid promotion. Whatever
feeling of this sort the events of his career may
suggest era overborne by pride in his growth,
and confidenoe in his ability to serve his coun
try in a manner commensurate with his advanc
ed position. lien. McClellan was married last
summer to a daughter of Captain Marcy, of
the regular army, and-granddaughter of the
