The city IMsbeen proformdly agitated by
dm news of , the death of Col. Ellsworth, slain
by a seeemiconist at Allemandes, Virginia. The
first report announced simply that he-had
been.assassinated. Every man in Chicago
elenehed his teeth with s firmer purpose to add

son set the dagger seem to be the favorite
weapons. No man ha, been watched by oar
citizens with warmer interest, since the to
ginning,. of the struggle, than Col. Ellsworth.
On no one have higher hopea been built. His

of command over his men, his unquestioned
valor, and the extensive information he had
acquired in the field of military operations
and modern tactic; gave misuse that in a

A. national military reputation made in a
time of profound peace by an obscure , young
man, : who never saw West Point, ie a rarity
indeed.' The Laity with which he7mastered
the mutt minute details of company drill was
not more remarkable than the grasp with
-which he comprehended the movement and
requirements of an army. The military bill
which was introduced in the Legislature at its
last regular session, and which panted the

Meenatucavltts, N. Y., May 25.—The
eassination of Colonel Ellsworth has caused,
in this, his native town, the utmost sorrow
and indignation. The father of Colonel Ells
worth happened to be in the telegraph (Mule
when the melancholy intelligence was readv
ad, and the first intimation he had of it was
seeing the operator weeping.
Mr. Elleworth's grid was indiscribable on
learning the sad news lie left, in company
with his wife, for New York, this evening, on
the Francis Skiddy. All the flags in town
'are at half mast. The sympathy expressed
for his parents is universal. The Colonel wan
their only living eon. About a year since his
younger brother, a young man of much abil
ity, died in Chicago.
A great excitement was created by one
Wellman, a Dutch peddler, -who thought-his
death was all right, and expressed his &anti
d manta favorable to the traitors.

Re was alloWed by the citizens twenty min

playing the Rogue's March,. with orders to
return no more.
Inctnisv.—The Cleveland nPlaindealer"
tells the following incident, which recently true
pired in the Kentucky Legialatace
A venerable old farmer from a neigboriog
county, one of that kind for whom Kentucky
has an instinctive veneration, appeared in the
Legislative Hall, uncovered his snowy locks and
eat down. At the first 101 l in the debate he
roserdowly and said he had a word to' say, but
was aware it was out of order for bim to speak
before the Legidatare while in session. His
dignified and venerable appearance arrested at
tention, and ..Go on," "Go on," from • several
voices, seemed to keep him on his feet. Again
exp 'mg his; diffidence at speaking out of pro-
p ty.--oHear ! bear 1" resounded generally
over the room. The members' canosity as
well as respect for the appearance and manner
of the man was up, and silence followed the

twenty-tour boars after—Good day," and he
left.
From Cairo
The following special dispatch to the Chicago

They will be placed at the point, the cellar of
the old distillery forming a sufficient breast

The steamer Silver Lake arrived at nine
