Col. P. Jarrett, Commander of Camp Wilkins,
yesterday received positive orders from Gov. Cur
tin, to the effect that only Ifs eempsnica can be
accepted from Alleg, heny county, under the late
requisition upon pennvylvania. This news was
promptly commnefeated to the Captains of the sev
eral C01X1p1,13103 nor orginiand here, and fell like
a bamb.hall among them. Them are sow up
wards of forty companies here. alfenions to cater
the service, ani the great apijurify of them belong
to this county.
An impromptu meeting of Capta i ns was
after bold at Mika'', Hall, at whith forty-five
companies were represented. embracing an aggro
gate of perhaps 3,000 men. A free interchange el
opinion washed, and the leafing wen decidedly to
favor ol dlobasdament. The men hays been re.
trotting and drilling for considerable time, many
of them having relinquished 'their holiness io the
confident eximctation of being mustered nt once
into service.
The ceder, av we underionsad A, heconsce nears.
nary tar the reason : that many countimie the State
have no representation wbstever in the quota tram
Penney!sante, andi it would be considered highly
unjust to take so large a minim' - from this county.
la other words, , tire remote counties protect
agates( Allegheny county sending her- thounands,
while they are not permitted to seed a single
company to take part in the war spinet Limon
and rebellion. -
After a spirited debate, in which it was suggest
ed thus the coinpaiiien represented should &lamed
on the instant, it Was agreed to postpone further
action until the eie companies should be chosen,
end another meeting of captains was fixed for this
morning at nine o!cloelt, to the Common Council
chamber, •t which Mune it is believed that the hell
doien compeniee to he selected' will be designated
by the Governor. lThe feeling now is deninely to
favor of abandoning the remaining in:linty organ
izattona, thus disperaing about 2 . soo:ezesg en i
troops.
The formation of an Independent imam has loom
freely dlantissed, but the Committee on Troop. and
Provltions, after a Quaint inveitigatien, have con.
eluded that Gib' miutentent would be impracticable,
If not impossible. Te support 3,000 men to map,
would Involve an ojpendttare eat least 35,000 per
woof, a sum beyond the ability of our community to
furnish for toy considerable length of time. Every
thingeonsidered, thism seems to be no alternative
but to disband the companies not falling within tbo
list of the lucky - -
The ocieetinn ot these companies will be a 613.
cult as well as a delicate matter, and Col. Jarrett
feeletbe responsibility °Chia position. It is likely
that the choice will be made by him, in connec
tion 'with the Committee out Troops and Pronn
ions, and then examitted to Governor Curtin for
his approval. The:wholo matter is really in the
harida*of UM Governor
It is surprising indeed, and speaks well for the
atictele and rectitude of our caner, that a., many
are offering their services and unable to obtain an
acceptance. I: is e matter of regret that so many
of our brave volunteers are compelled to restrain
their patriotism. Flat, ,r they return once more to
peaceful immune, let us hope that they may never
agate be called to arms.
