extract from a letter he has received from India,
describing in extraordinary fall of large slabs,
or meteoric stones, preceded and followed by
most singular physical convulsions, at a place
called llhanim Sal, situate in the distnct of
Kangra, northeast of the Punjab, among the
mountains in the lower range south of the:Him
alaya. The writer says "On the 28ttof July
horrible discordant noises 'rumbled forth from
the bowels of the earth, following each other
with the calmest rapidity. Then succeeded long
and load explosions, which 'gradually decreased
in degree and duration. l'hen came intensely
luminous Holies of the, each dame about 12
feet in length shooting with extreme velocity
from north I to south, as though belched forth
from the mouth of ordnance of extraordinary
size and calibre.
These. main were replaced by a shower of
meteoric stones, which, wherever they fell,
ploughed up the earth like so many cannon
balls. 1 subsequently strolled over the •field
of destruction,' and discovered a number of
boulders and meteoric atones of divers forms
and size, many of which bore a peat mem
titmice to ordinary cannon balls just discharged
from the engines of war, bat which when touch•
