The Southern Unionists.
We bate several times spoken of the
danger in which the Demncrolio plan
woald place the Unionists of the Border
and Southern Sutc, and of the discourag
ing influence flicb it exercises upon all
who hate any disposition to c mtiouo or
renew their allegiance ia districts which
ere disputed by the rebels. Io a sprcch
Dide at Cinciouad, llev. Dr. IIreckis
BJbbR, of Kentucky, spoke on this point
as follows :
"Now I am free to sty to you, my
friend;, II. at, if you make Ibid cfLosive,
disgraceful peace, i here are many thousands
of us io Kentucky that n:li not submit to
it. AppUuse J Wo will not go into
that Southern Confederacy. Applause
You may ft n apart by treaty, or io
any other way you please, by the Ohio

Maryland, thousands of loyal men who

Best fight for Ihem again, and you must
etand by as, or be disgraced. We don't
intend to belong to the Southern Confed

Kealocky, and Kentucky carry us into the
Southern Confederacy, we don't intend lo
go. We will call upon you to help whip
them, aod keep as from going. I will
frankly say to you, that we are afraid of
Botbiog io the world exeept of you. We
are not afraid of anything they can do,
at we are afraid there will be a political
revolution io the North, whereby the North
will desert as aod leave as to be crushed
eat. Tbat is all we are afraid of. If you
will stand firm, triumph is just as certain
as that to morrow's suo will rise. If you
give way la a time like this, yoa will
briog opoa yourselves and upon us infinite
desolation, and tbe country is lost. Don't
yoa know, as I said before, tbat God has
raised yea up for such a time as this? If
yoa do not prove yourselves worthy of it,
yoar booor will be destroyed, and God
will briog deliverance from aoothcr quar
ter. If yoa are altogether unworthy of
tbe men tbat God has sent before you, if
io a time like this yoa Northern people
fail to do yonr duty, yoa will go dowa to
yoar dishonored graves, aod your children 1
will stand op and weep over you, and do
that which yoa ought to have done your
selves." This venerable clergymen expresses an
opinion com moo to all honest Southerners

Oi the 13th Oct., 1863, soon after the

with limbs shot off, aod wounds aod scars

hands for ballots as they were distributed,
and With faces pale but eyes bright and
determined, some who, before sundown,
were earried out on stretchers to soldiers'
graves, east their votes, and fired one
