quite concur in their view. We belief e,
of eonrt-c, tilt I'cnDflsania, is well as
New York an! other States, ought to have
bal in readiness military f.irce ; we think
the ceglcot of Ilia militia drill io (ho free
tltates great mistake. 15ut Caambers
borg might hate been bnrneJ by the Reb
els even if the militia of I'tDDfjIvauia bad
boen perfectly drilled.
Wo see another, and even a more im
portant lesson in this gad affair, by which
tnun of five thousand inhabitants issuJ
dc-cly blotted from the map, and its people
f red to fly for their lives, leaving to des
truction all their property. What has
btppeocd to Cbarabersburg, will some day
tspi'cn to Pittsburg. The fa'e of this
town of fho thousand people, will be shared
by many border cities of fifty or a hand
le! cr two hundred thousand if ire do
not crush out die rebellion. Already Ciucin
nata has been threatened twice, Louis
ville twice, Nashville twice, St. Louis
once. Already many thousands of dollars
Lava been spent in defences fortheeocities,
end still they aro cot safo from attack.
How many millions would it cost to erect
defences along our wholo border 7 How
many year would be needed to complete
them f How many hundred thousand sol
diers wonld bo required to guard them 7
And without such defences, without a
Chinese wall to separate as from the South,
does any one believe the border-land
waul be safo or habtiablo in rase the Reb
els triumph and (heir Confederacy is ac
knowledged? What security is there
Spain! the repetition of such raids as Ear
ly'sanl Breckinridge's, Forrest'", Morgan's
and Qaanlrell's t Wi-at farmer of Penn
sylvania, or Ohio, or Illinois, or Missouri,
C3ull sleep io peace, could plant his corn,
or sow bis wheat, cr bcrd bis cattle, with
reasonable bops of reaping tbo fruits of
his labors? Our whole border line for fif
teen hundred utiles, would bs subject daily
cr nightly to masacre and robbery, on the
slightest pretexts.
i'or, remember these Southern gentle
men have slaves io toil for them ; tSeir
own bread is secure; th'y are Idlers, and
a foray tanss (ho border would be as
mieh sport, fir them, as it was in tho last
c-nturj to Rob Roy and bis clansmen.
They would like nothing better than to
' harry the Vanke.-s," and they would al
ways be able to raise a company, a regi
ment a brigade, division, Lr each, an
expedition.
ilut It will bo said, we should punish
them for such outrages; the Uoitcd States
G:vernm"jnt wonld still bo puwerfu
rnoogh to command and enforce respect.
That is just where wo should make a fatal j
mistake. The Confederacy is now weaker
ti.aa it ever will be ag-iin. The power,
tbe mean, the prestige of the slaveholders, '
all are nearly broken. If, now, we are un
able to beat them ; if, now, we givo up
tbe contest ; if, now, we permit ourselves
to fail, they will never fear us hereafter;
tbey will know that tbey may do nearly
what they phase agtint ns, without fear.
For, they trill say, wo whipped tbe Yan
kees when we were weakest, and tbey
will never dare attack us again.
But, tbo reader repli.-s, thry would
make a preat mistake they would d-aw
down destruction upon thir hoads if they
should act upon any such theory; we
