thereby swelling visitors to the Fair for
tbe good of soldiers, aod winning esteem i
among all classes. During a publio gree
ting, a speech was elicited from bim, which
is reported in the papers as follows :
War at tbe best is terrible, and this of
ens may almost De said to be bung in black. 1
And yet it continues. It has bad accom-
paninicnts not before known in tbe history
of the world. I mean the Sanitary and
Christian Commissions, with their labors
for tho reFef of the soldiers, and tho Vol
unteer Refreshment Saloons understood
better by thoso that hear mo than by my
self. Applause.
And these Fairs, began at Chicago, next
held at Roston, Cincinnati, and in other
cities tbo motivo aod object that lie at
the bottom of them, is worthy of the most
that we can do for the soldier who goes to
fight tbe battles of his country. From tbe
fair and tender band of woman is much,
very much, done for the soldier ; contin
ually reminding- him of tbo care and
thought for bim at home, the knowledge
that be is not forgotten is grateful to bis
heart. Applause
Another view of these institutions is
worthy of thought. They are voluntary
contributions, giving proof that the na
tional resources are not at all exhausted,
and that the national patriotism will sus
tain us through all.
It is a pertinent question, when is Ibis
war to end ? I do not wish to name
day when it will and, lest tbe end should
not come at the givon time. We tccept
