A eotninittee of the Methodist General
Conference, sitting in Philadelphia, called
upon Prcsideut Lincoln, and delivered an
address to bim approving bis devotion to
the perpetuity of tbe government. Mr.
Lincoln rer. lied ts follows :
"Gentlemen: In response to your
address, allow me to attest tbe accuracy
of ita historical ntalcmant, endorse tbe
sentiments it exposes, and thank you,
in tbe nation's name, for tbe sure promise
it gives. Nobly sustained, as tbe Gov
ernment has been by all tbe churches, I
would utter nothing which might in the
least appear invidious agtiQst any. Yel,
without this, it mar fairly be said thai
the Methodist Episcopal 'Jiiurcb, not let j
devoted than th beet, is, by its greatest
numbers, the most important of all. It
is no fauit in others that the Methodist
church sends Diure 'soldiers to tho field,
more nurses to tbe hospitals, and more
prayers to Heaven than any. God bless
tbe Methodist church ! bless all tbe
churches 1 and blessed be God, who, in
Ibis great trul, giveih us tbe churches 2"
