Enclosed j.lro God 2150, for my
tenth jear'a subscription, for jour moat
' welcome visitor, which 1 believe failed
' coming to baud once io dido years.
Yesterday closed Ibe Ladies' fair and
Kaitar io this placa, for tbe bent fit of Ibe
soldiers' families. It was open da; and
bight from Cbristinai eve, and atieudud by
ibousauds. Tbc lirge Hall, cousisliDg of
' eeveoteen unfinished rooms of the third
e tore j of tbe Becks! Building, with a
tweutv foot ball or eotrv. were crowded
full, so much so at times that it was diffi
cult to pass to and fro. Tbe rooms or
booths were grand, arid tastefully d'jcnra
ted, and furnished with tho very best o
furniture, pictures, curtains, 8., that
could be fouud in the bent of parlors in tbe
city. Kich booth bad a stove or fire
place, aod, filled with goods and merchan
dize, tbe ocoupaoti being clad in differed
' national costumes, (Turkish, Chinese,
Japaoeso, French, Dutch, Yankee, Q la
ker, Gipsej, ic.,) made all exceedingly
rich and attractive. There was a splen
did dinio; ball, white tbe best tbe market
could afford was provided. Every store,
ebop or manufactory was represented in
some kind of goods, machinery or imple
ments. The whole, including the provis
ions for tbe tables, was donated to the
Fair and Iinr by the citizns of the
town and couutry, and all offered for sale,
mostly by chance prices, tbe balauce by
auction, yielding between $15,000 aod
$20,000. Tbe ci:ii"09 never enj lycd a
more pleasant buliday festival, as the en
lire town and coun'ry took the most lively
interest in it. Every congregation, de
nomination and assooiatioo, high and low
rieb and poor were engaged, (exocpt the
Catholics, and most rabid Vallaudigbain-
itcs : the Utter "would uotfumuh a man
or a dollar ")
Another Hall on the second floor was
used for tableaux and charade entertain

flour aod provision proecssiona, one of
over three hundred and Sfty wagons.
Subscriptions are now circulate g in
every ward and district, to raise money
for securing recruits to save Ibe draft, iu
which the most lively interest is manifes
ted by all classes. It would seem the peo
ple are truly awaking, and taking the
means in their own bands to crush out
this needless and accursed Rebellion.

it is exceedingly cold, being oo New

Pets in the Army.
The following shows that nature is the
tame in the army as out of it.
They have the strangest pete in the
army that nobody could dream of "taking
to" at borne, and yet tbey are little touches
cf ibe gentler nature tbat give you some
such cordial feeling, when you see tbem,
as 1 am told residents of Bourbon county,
Ky-, habitually experience at so much a
gallon. One of the boys has carried a
led squirrel through ."thick and thiu'
over a thousand miles. "Bun" cats hard
tack like veteran, and has tbe freedom
of the tent. Another's aff . ctions ovtrfl iw
upon a slow-winking, unspeculative little
owl, caplured in Arkansas, and bearing a
name with a classical smack to it Miner
va. A third gives his heart to a young
Cumberland Mountain bear, but chief
among camp-pets are dogs. Hiding on a
addle-bow, tucked into a baggage wagon,
mounted on a knapsack, growling under a
gun, are dogs brought to a premature end
to' ears and tails, and yellow at that ;
pug-nosed, square-headed brutes, slick
terriers, delicate morsels of spaniels,
Tray, Blanche, Sweet heart, little dogs
and all." A dog, like a horse, comes to
love tbe rattle and crash of a musket and
cscnoo. There was one to an Illinois
regiment, and I rather think regarded as
belonging to it, though his name might
not be on the muster-roll, that chases
b!f spent shot as a kitten frolics with a
ball of worsted. He has been under fire
twice.wonnded, and left the tip of bis tail
at tbe battle of Stoue River. Woe to the
man tbat shall wantonly kill him. But I
was especially interested in the fortunes
of a little white spaniel tbat mewed with
a battery and delighted io the name of
"Dot." No matter what was op, that
fallow's silken coat mutt be washed every
day, and there was need of it, for when
tbe battery waa on a march they just
plunged him into the sponge bucket not
tbe tidiest chamber imaginable tbat
wings like its more peaceful cousin, the
tar bucket, under the rear axle of the gun
carriage plumped bim into tbat, clapped
oa the cover, aod lot was good for an
inside passage. One day tbe battery cross
ed a stream of water thut eame well up to
the gns. Nobody thought of Dot, aod
when all across a gunner looked into the
bucket ; it was full of water, and Dot was
at dead as little dirty door-mat. Ex
change. Arch Bishop Hughes.wbo died recently
