Joe Parsons, of Baltimore.
As we passed along a hall, we first saw
kim.croucbed ocarao open window, lustily
singing, "I'm a bold soldier boy." Seeing
the bread band ago over bis eyes, I said
"What is your name, my good fellow ?''
"Jo, sir," he answered, "Jo Parsons."
"And what's the matter with you V
61iud, sir blind as a bat."

"Yes at Antietatu. Ujth eyes shot

Poor J jc was in Iho front, at Aatietam ;
s minnio ball parsed directly through Lis
eyes, across his face, destroying bis sight
for ever. Ha was but twenty years old,
but was as happy as a I irk !
"It is dreadful," I said.
"I 'm very thaukful I'm alive, sir. It
might ha' been worse, yer see," be contin
ued. And (ben be told ns his story.
"I was Lit and it knocked me down.
I lay there ill night, md next day the
fight was renewed; I could staud the pain,
yer lie, but the balls was fly io all 'round,
and I wanted to get away. I couldo't
see bo! bin, though. So I waited, and at
last I hcamd a fellow groanin beyond me:
"Hello !" says I.
'Hello ycrself 1" says he.
"Who be yer," says I, 'a Rebel ?"
"You're a Yankee."
"So I am," says I, "What's the matter
with you : '
"My leg's smashed," says he.
"Can't yer walk V
"No."
"Can yer see V
"Yes."
"Well you're a Rebel, but will yon do
mo a little favor V
"I will," says be, "ef I kin."
"Well, ole butternut, I can't see noth
in'. My eyes is knocked out, but I kin
walk. Come over ycre. Let's git out o'
this. You piut the way an' I'll tots you
off the Geld on my back."
"Bully for you," says he.
And so we managed to git together.
We shook bands on it. I took a wink
outcn bis canteen, and be gat on to my
shoulders. I did the walkin' for both,
and he did the navagatin'. An' cf he

Bo, after three days, I came down here
with the woonded boys, where we're duin

"Cat you will never tee tho light

pathetically. "That's so," he answered, glibly, "but
I can't help it, yon notice." I did my

my misfort'o, cot my fault, as the olo
man said of bis blind boss. Rut, 'I'm a

unlucky, but stout-hearted Jo Parsons !
TnB Wikd. Tie wind blew furiously
Dearly alt day yesterday. We don't men
tion it as an item of news, because every
body knew it, bnt we make a record of it
It blew with the greatest possible gust-o.
TVs saw a few bats blown iff and each
owner of each particular "tile" made vig
orous and Lot always graceful movements
to recover the runaways. Alas! we know
bow provoking it is to nnbend our digni
ty to the tak of chasing a bat, but it is
laughable to see another become a sudJen
Victim to the accident. Walking proudly
erect, and thinking perhaps bow infernal
ly the wind blows, he suddenly raises his
band spasmodically and clasps bis band
violently on Lis exposed bead ! Eagerly
lie looks around him, the bat is scarcely
a dezea. feet distant He advances, and
gets bis hand almost on it ; the bat re
cedes a little : he follows it ; the bat re
tires little farther; impatiently, be
makes "snirited charee." and almost
has it; the bat povokingly turns on its
rim, ana rapidly performs an -oowaru
movement." Then cooks the scene.
Forgetful of dignity, forgetful of his fran
tic appearance, with streaming, boriiontal i
Lair and coat tails be sets out on the
danl,l. onii," .nd fin.llv into a run.
Email beys of intemperate speech shoot at
kim, "Sail in," "I'll bet on the bat," "Go
it, old pop two to one on the beaver,"
and other gratuitous and very annoying
eriticisms ; but the bat must be regained,
nd, finally, success crowns his efforts.
Mobs Rebel Barbarity. The Co
Jumbal (Ky.) H'ar Eajle of a recent date
gives the following :
"Jordan Hills lived on the Mobile 4
Ohio Kailroad, eighteen miles from Troy.
On the 27th March, Mr. Hills was taken
by a party of men claiming to belong to
Dawson't band of Rebel guerrillas ; he
was tied op and whipped, and afterward
gagged, bis ears and nose eat off, and
three of bis fingers amputated and carried
way as trophies and souvnirs! After
ward, bis skull was laid open with a
sabre and bis brains scattered and tramp
led opon by At muiderers and all be
etuse he was Uoiju man and not
traitor."
