Matters about Newport Mews.
OrreonJar "r th stmr Ctironirle.
Newport News, Feb. 25, 18C3.
Newport News is no town. There are
one or two houses near the shore two
piers that run out into the James River
some log barracks surrounded by ao em-
, bankruent with a dry ditch, and some j
eirthen works where guns bad been!
mouuted. Standiug in our camp ground,
you can sec water down toward Ft. Mod-
t roe to the left, up the James river to the
right, and water over toward Norfolk.
i For several hundred yards from tbe shore
it is bare sand plain, on:e cultivated,
now without fence, tree or shrub. IJaek
I
of that it is swampy, and backed with
heavy pitch timber. Thus it is up as far
as you can see ; aud here the troops are
: nicanipid. Our life is as bare of inci
' dent as tbe sandy plain is of trees, i'ack
i uf us there arc roads ruubing through tbe
woods, where wc have outposts. Trivial i
i tics afford us some little amusement.
There is an old Scotchman living there who
sells ale at tho rate of about thirty dollars
the half barrel, and butler at 40 cents tbe
round. Uue of our Lieuteuauts was ou
duty out there, one dark night Dot long
: ago, and hearing a noise, like tbe scream
of a goose, pur.-utd ; crossing the field be
I saw a man standing there, and bailing him
asked where that goose was he beard
scream, "lie j ibers, I dou't know. I
heard one squalling about her somewhere."
Ou closer investigation, l'addy was found
landing wilb his foot on tbe goose's neck,
, Tne Lieutenant picked it up and. carried
it back to the house, and coming into the
light found his gloves and coat covered
with blood the throat had been cut and
life was extinct. The old lady recognized
it her only goose, and bemoaned its loss
with tears. ' 1'eir me, tbe poor thing's
