Tho U-ippahannock firms the boundary
on the northeast, the Anna river on the

its limits. The surface is diversified, the
soil generally fertile iu the vicinity of the

of the county is Spottsylvania Court

Richmond, with which it is connected by

It is just sixty years ago, by date, to-dsy.
I thought, aa I sat down on the vault, and.
not having pencil or paper, took an old
shingle and scratched a copy of the above
lines on it. I could not help thinking of
tbe inscription on the reverse aide. Ooe
bright Sunday morning, Juaa 5, lv2,
John Stanley aeot a challenge to Gen.
Ppaight: they met, the same afternoon:
Gen. Spaight fell, mortally wounded, and
died the next day. In the prime of life,
aurroundad by admiring friends, io the
full flow of political popularity, talented,
witb the reputation of a brave man (he
bad been Aid to Go. Caswell at tbe bat
tle of Camden) with wealth, honor, and
power, he fell, that quiet Sabbath after
noon. We ean not read all tbe coster
cation in the city the horror of the dread

greatest politicians of X-irth Carolina he
il called "the great Tactician" was
pardoned, on bis petition, by Gov. Swain,

From a Trivate in fo. D., 52J P. V.
M on dat, June 2
I left tbe Ilo.pital last Wednesday, and
got to our 52d Re. Friday morning. Our
brigade and division bad been io advance
ever since we passed Williamsburg. From
the right of the picket line, where I found
our Regiment, we eould bear th. belis
ring in KichmDod. But we were io a
danger, place. Friday and Friday oight
it rained tb. hardest that I ever saw it
we were completely drowned out of eamp.
Saturday our picket, were attacked by tbe
enemy their force being, aetv-rding to
the prisoners taken from them, 40,000
men when our brigade was f-rmed in
line, and engaged them at once. After
the tight became hot, our Regimfnt were
ordered to advance, which ws did np to
the edge of a dens, wood, when we were
confronted by a large force. They opened
fire at onee, which we returned with good
will, but they bad tb. advantage io the
ground. In balf an hour, tbey drove io
tb. 104ib on our left flacked us and
fired on ns from three .idee. The balls
2:w around like bail, and our men fell
thick and fast. We were compelled to
retire, witb beavy loss, to osr brigade, and
after falling back a mile and a half, Sum
ner', division eaccetded io driving bsck
the enemy. Yesterday, the Rebels occu
pied our old camp ground, but were driven
out again, and our division is prepared to
give tbem a warm reception. Rut there
are only a thousand men left of our divis-;
ion, and our regiment can not raise more .
tbaa 1G0 men. Oar Company .leers
and two sergeant, were wounded. There
were four private, killed, and several
wounded mostly from Trevorton. Lieut.
Cosksieo and Ualliet are missing. Sta-
pletoo has just eome io camp: be was taken .
prieooer, but was rescued. The other Le

clothe, bad aeveral bole, put io by balls,
and a spent bullet ia my left side knocked
m. over, but did m. do injury except tea-'

escaped. '
