DOG EAT DOG.
At the battle of Tea Kiipe, Arkansas,
the Rubt'ls had fathered chiefly by the
arts of Albert l'ike, a renegade YauVee
emtio 2100 of the Choet.iws, and other
trif' in that reiim, to aid them, lieforo
coming into eoUision, these eivaeon were
piven whiskey and gunpowder, to render
thorn ferx'ioiM. Nut they did nut prove
e.finl to the I'liiou troops in cod, unflin
thing courage, and tuanly fight. They
wpeeiilly feared our artillery skalked
hootin in auibush, and scalping and
plundering the wounded of both armies,
with ''impartial" fury. One 1 ;y, when
thus "primed," the savages seemed to
forget everything except the traditional
aud other wrongs of their race, suffered at
the hauda of tha "pale faces," and, upon
encountering a body uf Kebel troops, they
attacked them fiercely ; the latter retalia
ted ; and hundreds on both sides fell "it
was one of the bloodiest events of the
three days' fighting. The Rebels and the
Indians, it is said, have become mutually
"disgusted" with each other, and have
dissolved partnership, the Indians return
ing homewards, ''wiser if not better men"
after their '-free fight." The incidents
furnish JAMES AlKEN with his test for
the followiug lines.
They hired a sivagc foo
In fratricidal strife;
O, retribution just!
They felt hi scalping-knife.
They "fired the Indian heart''
With alcohol and lies: .
And, see ! beneath their stroke
The false deceiver dies !
They sowed the treacherous wind,
And soon the harvest came
The whirlwind's blackened cloud
Of murder, blood, aud flame.
They dug a deep, wide pit,
For honest, loyal men,
And when their work was dono
Xu they were tumbled theu.
Not always can we trace
Cod's vengeance against wrong,
Yet J ustiee comes at la.-t,
Though oft it tarries long.
Ave some tiines'in the course
Of Providence is seen
The plotting murderer's lifo
CrtL-hed by his owu machine,
gee Hainan's body swung
I'pon that gallows now
Which his own brain had planned
For Mordeeai the Jew.
The Rebel leaders brought
Armed Indians on the plain:
' Now sec the l'.ebtl troops
I5y Indians scalped and slain !
An Incident.
When tha U. S. vesssls were on their
way to attack Fcrnandini, they picked up
a contraband who ventured to sea id a
taiall boat to notify them that the Rebels
were deserting the place. While question
ing the black, some ofiicers of the Alabama
remarked that be ehould have brought
them newspapers, to let them know what
was goiag on. "I thought of dat," replied
the contraband "and fotcbed a Ibarlcston
paper wid mc." With this be put a hand
in bis bosom and drew forth a paper, and,
with the air of a man who was rendering
an important service, handed it to the
circle of inquirers. They grasped it
eagerly, but one glance induced a general
burst of lirghter, to the profound astonish.-
meat of poor Cuffee, who, it seems, could
not road, and, imagining one paper as
good as another, had brought ooo dated
1822 rcaTY tsars old! The South
Carolina relie was forwarded to Thomas B.
Stillman, Eq , of this city, as one of the
cariosities of the war. It is a little odd
that this paper, which has floated so long
down the stream of time, contains an ar
ticle U facor of nnjro emancipation. Ar.

Jcstic Capt.Charles Leib, formerly
a resident of this borough, was recently
charged with being behind, in his accoanu
with the Government, as Quartermaster
in Western Virginia, to the amount of a
Billion of dollars. lie says the charge is
unfounded, as he has vouchers for every
dollar of the Government money eipended
in his department, but that he was delayed
somewhat in gettiag I hem. They are now,
however, in Washington. Got. t'icrpont
and Gen. Roieucrans endorse bis report as
correct. We make the statement in jus

oqacstioned, and whose integrity is
sustained by unimpeachable testimony.

Thus another "sensation" story is ex

stand, from long experienoe, the benefit
of letting the most people possible know
when thoy want ta buy or sell. Even in
these "hard times," or rather "unsettled"
times, the public sales of farm stocK, e.,
nearly equal those of last year. Last
week, there were fifty six bams adver

Backs eounty is famous all over the State
for the active, bosiness, stable, prosperooe
character of ber population, as displayed
in the advertising colantns of the county
papers. '
