After weeks of onreniitting toil, e
hsv t list ono da; of nit. Evidently,
yeatorday, everything wis reajly. TLe
pr. at fleet lies idly rocking 00 the Soiled.
It is aaid tliat Kurnsiiia bas raid, that be
would not atart 00 a Friday or a Sunday :
Ilia first, because of the superstition con
nected with it ; the eoeond, becaas it was
not right. It eeema like Sunday. The
busy Sitting to and fro of the littU tags,
the playing of bands, the drilling on the
hurricane decks, the schooner with the big
W (water), at the foremast, gliding from
bip to ship there is none of it to-day;
only the usual Sunday Company inspec
tion. With that, however, then was
more than osual interest taken, in the
annJitina of the arm, the aeooatrementa,
and ammunition. Yesterday we saw the
schooners to be taken in tow by each
ship brought op, coal put on board, water
fur tea days, provisions for fifteen all
seams to be ready it is the loll before
the storm. Tt-morrow it will be four
weeks ainee we embarked at Annapolis.
It is well that wa have to "go it blind" as
to the future. On might be otherwise
deterred from attempting many things.
We of the Cuuack have been lucky. We
were the first to enter the Inlet the first
large ahip that crossed the Swash. Vet
we have experienced incon eniencca that
were hard to bear. Still we hare not bad
near what those on the Scout had loosed
about for five days, put en short allow
ance of water, in a storm said to be the
severest of the season, not able to see the
sua for three days, inobt of thum desper
ately sea-sick wa felt a sort of selfish
congratulation, with all our sympathy for
them. The picture they gave ns, was vary
comical. When men have to ait down on
the flour, leg braeed against each other,
dinner in a basket, to keep it together,
and when, after so much difficulty in get
ting it down, not to be able to retain it
there it seems to be the pursuit of a
living under extreme adverse circumstan
ces. The Companies were brought over
from the Scant, lo lighten her, so as to
briog her over the Swash. For some rea
son, she drd not get over for two dsys. A
thousand men orowded on our ship, alrea
dy crowded with bare cix hundred, mad
it uncomfortable in the highest degree.
No policing could be done, and the floors
got ofiy, slimy and slippery, dirt an inch
" ' ' " I
or two in thickness. Many slept out on
the hurricane deck, but the last night it J
rained, and all bad to come in. The gang
ways, floors of both decks, were strewed
full, lying down in the nasty filth, eqoalled
only by the condition of a pig stye oh, it
was horrible! It could not be helped,
however. The next morning, when the
Scout csme up, a most hearty, spontaneous
cheer broke out. The crews of both ves
sels were glad to get clear of each other.
We, that we might get !eaned and breath
ing room ; they, that they may get back to
their quarters, which were cleaned in their
absence. Our ship looks lighter, gayer,
since tbey are gmo, and is as clean as a
iiew pin. Wo each love ear own ship,
end neither would exchange with the other.
One caa not but appreciate the love the
sailor has for the bark that has borne him
bravely through the many dangers of the
deep. Yon feel like patting its prow, and
kissing its figure-head. The Companies
that were on the Scout as she tint np
I could see their eyes glisten not mere
ly with pleasure at the near escape from
our noisome den tbey dilated with affec
tion for the gallant bark, their home and
their safe-place, through so many dark
nights and dangerous days. The health
of theregimcut is excellent. There is but
one sitk in Company K, sad one in
Company II, convalescent, and in no dan
ger. Those that have been sick, ars hearty
