John lod me moved out from North Caro

On will you be so good as to direct me ?
S. Will I T Why, that's what I am
going to do. As I was saying, John and
me moved out together. Ho settled over
there just t'other side of the maple swamp
but he don't live there now.
T. In the namo of wonder, where docs
be live, then? Now do, my good sir,
jost inform me the way !
S. I will, that : for, as I was saying,
if there is anything in the world I do
know, it is the way to John Smith's.
Why, John and me married sisters, and
he's got a jam-up wife, I tell you. She
can spin her six cuts a day, and attend to
family fixtures into the bargain. And
T. I declare, sir, I shall get impatient
presently. My business is with Smith
not bis wife, or her family fixios either.
S. Exactly, sir, I understand that.
But, as I was saying, John's nigger man
Bob is, I do reckon, the valuablest nigger
in all these diggins. Why, be can pick
out his 150 pounds of cotton a day, and
then shell a turn of corn for mill at night.
He's a clinker, now, mind I tell you.
T. Wsll, I would be glad to see so
Smart a negro as Mr. Bob ; to do, I pray,
direct me to bis master's.
8. Don't be in such a tv-itir, mister ;
I can telly oo something more about John's
family you'd like to know. lie's got the
smartest little gal that's in all Arkansas.
She's only been to school two years, and

T. Confound John Smith's daughter,
and you with her I I think you have got
as far as amplification yourself. For I ask
jou a simple question, and you have been

subjects, and I am no nearer getting an
answer it seems, than at first
S. liuok'e here, stranger; don't you
confound John's daughter, for she's my
niece, and a smart one the is, too. Be
sides, it is not respectful to talk so about
the child, seeing you know nothing about
her.
T. I beg your pardon, sir, I did speak i
too hastily. But come, tell me the way
to John Smith's; for that is all I want to
know just now. Which road shall I take?
S. Tell you the way ? Yes, that I

T. Good day, sir; and may old Nick
take yon, and John Smith's daughter,
nigger Bob, and the whole family !
8. The same to you and journ. (Well,
eich another man I never did see. Why,
lie's as techous as a half skinned eel. On
ly to think, he kept axin' and azin,' and
I kept tenia' and tellin, and he wouldn't
stay to hear the answer at last. Well, let
him go ahead ; but if he goes that road,
be'll never get to John Smith's, that's
aartin.)
What's is a Name 1 Louisville Jour
nal notices that one Frederick S. Brown,
of Louisiana, has petitioned t be Louisiana j
Legislature to change his namo to South
gate, "because the acts of John Brown
hare affixed a stigma upon the name of
Brown that is intolerable." Brown South
gate is more nice than wise. If John
Brown has "affixed a stigma," Sir Thomas
Brown has affixed a very enviablo reputa
tion, and Frederick bad better let one bal
ance the other, and keep bis name. Be
sides, if be does, ho won't let the world
see what a fool be is.
Mrs. Frances D. Sage, of Missouri, for.
merly of Ohio, might claim the nomina
tion of President, ander the authority of
Mr. Beccher, "having brought up sis un
ruly boys," whose aggregate height would
form a eolumn thirty-sis feet high in hon
or of their mother, who will all vote the
Republican ticket in 1S60, with but one
exception, and he has not yet attained bis
majority. Not one of tbem smokes or
chews tobacco, or stimulates the inner
man with intoxicating beverages. Mrs.
Gsge is also the mother of two daughters.
Don't take toe Bait. Prentice, of
the Louisville Journal, says :
"We have been requested to advocate
Mr. Bates' election to the Presidency.
We must know more about him first. We
can't swallow Baitt till we sec wbetherwe

and I wonder, when I see any man or wo

and reflective powers, uiog it in any way.
Its lustiness is sclf-eviJent, and strikes
clear through, like salt in a beef barrel,
except that salt purifies, while tobaeco poi

sible, cleanly, clever, well-feeling, pious,
respectable, decent man, to be obliged to
breathe within thirty feet of a tobacco
chewer or smoker. Then what must it be
far a delicately constituted, refined and
sensitive woman, to take snuff, or to be
obliged to see a man who chews, even
across the street ! It makes me sick to
think about it, and I do hope that among
your other joys in Yrcka, yon have a well
enforced law, that all smokers, chowers
and snuff takers, shall be imprisoned in a
horse stable or pig stye, nntil their breath
becomes sweet, and their clothes released
from the fetid aroma of tobacco. This,
not to enlarge, is a faint expression of
the mild views I bold on this subject.
