Bow Portsmouth was Bombarded.
The towo of Portsmouth, in the gallant
Granite State, is a place uf q m-t habits
and commendable decorum, even in this
fast age. Thirty years ago, in the course
of examining into the state of tbe towo,
eome of tbe chaps discovered a dozen old
cannons "laying around loose, upon a
wharf close to what n culled Liberty

guns had been left upon that wharf by a
privateer, at the close of the War of 1;' 12,
and although they had made 6mie noise
in the world in ihcir diy, yet they were
tut "dumb dz" at that time. Inwardly,
they might be termed constipstcd by an

their throats should be cleaned aud allowed
to speak once more. After many weeks
cf bard night toil, tho whole doren gins
were reported in good, clean, reliable con
