ORGANIZATION. The Convention convened at 10 o' clock Moutox M'Micuael, of Phil ad., temporary chairman. The only disputed seats were those from Mont-f-omery county, from which the sett chosen at the regularly called con vention for tho purpose (as reported by a committee) were admitted. Da vid Taguart of Northumberland was ! chosen President cf the Convention, with the usual array of Vice Presi dents and Secretaries, and after ap pointing a committee on rcsolutionsi the Convention adjourned until 3 o' clock. ArDiTon General. The canvass for this most import ant officer, was most ardent, and con tested through a dozen or fifteen bal lots. The principal candidates were Messrs. Cochran of York, Jordan of Bedford, Lawrence of Washing ton, Scllivan of Butler and Snyder of Snyder. The three Western men at first had a large majority, but not lieing able to agree, the choice of the Convention fell, finally, upon Mr. Cochran, and ho was unanimously nominated. Mr. Cochran is at present Publish er and Editor of the Lancaster L'niun, (formerly the M7.) but calls York Lis home. lie formerly represented the strong Democratic county of York in the State Senate, of which he was a distinguished Member. lie is a well-read, sound lawyer, and as such well qualified for the station to which he is nominated. The only ob jections wo have heard urged against him during the canvass, were, that lie was almost too clever a man to say "No !" when he should, and that he did not love the unceasing hard work and watch required from that sleepless and vigilant guardian of the Treasury. We . have no personal knowledge of the gentleman, and men tion these public surmises in order to make a full breast of the matter, and for his own benefit. Confiding as we do in the good sense and judg ment of those who know him best, and who adhered to him first and last and having no confidence in the fitness of his Lccompton opponent, Mr. Wright we shall look and la bor for the success of TnoMAS E. Cochran, lie was cheated out of the office of Canal Commissioner by the frauds ori856, and can hardly be thus wronied again. His namo was first suggested for this office, we believe, in our columns, and althongh not our first choice he shall have our first vote. With anything like a fair effort of the Opposition, his election is conceded by men of all parties. Scrvetob General. For this office, "old Berks" made a clean sweep. Messrs. Mann of Pot ter, Irvine of Warren, and other pood men were proposed, but Gen. Wm. U. Keim was endorsed by an overwhelming vote, which was made unanimous. Mr. Keim nas been May or of Reading and was recently Member of Congress from Berks is a strong man, personally, among the Military, among old line Whigs, and among the "discriminating Democ racy. Cochran of York and Lancaster, and Keim of Berks, is a strong team. Numerous speeches were made par ticularly from the West by members Ticing with each other in determina tions to do their best to give them a triumphant majority. the platfobw, A combined and determined effort has been put forth, for gome months past, by certain nnprincipaled relics of the "straight" Americans, to per vert this Convention into a machine for breaking np the Republican orga nization and ignoring the all-engross ing question of Slavery ! A few bet ter men, of timid natures, sympathiz- I cd with this feeling, and thoa-ht itcx- pcdientfor Pennsylvania to inatigii- ! friends of the movement had seats in the Convention, and were allowed to ' give full ventilation to their bright , ideas, both in Committee and Con J volition, but the calm, decided votes i of the delegates, put them down. t"c members repairing to partake ot a strawberry entertainment at Gen Cameron', near town and others turning their face homeward. Resolutions, te., next week. The Republicans of Kansas. The Republican Contention at Osnowa. tomie, Kanas, on th second day of its sittiog (May 19th) agreed upon a prem ble and resolutions, which tbey haro put forth as tbe platform of tbeir party in Kansas. It conform, generally to the principles proclaimed by the latt National Hepnblican Convention, and in reference to slavery says : Reiotoetf, That while ws declare our submission to tbe Constitution and laws of tbe United States, and disclaim all control over slavery in the States in which it exists, we hold that the Constitution does not csrry Slavery into the Tarrito ries, bat that it is the creature of special enactment, and bas existence only where supported by it, and we reprobate and condemn tbe perversion of tbe 8upreme Court of tbe United States to sectional demands and party purposes. Retohed, That freedom is national, and slavery sectional, and that we are inflexi bly opposed to the extension of slavery to soil now free. Horsed Greeley, among others, address ed the Convention, in a speech of great power and earnestness. Oo his return from tbe Convention, be wss met two miles south of Lawrence by tba authori ties of tbe latter city, and a cavalcade, each horseman wearing in his hat band a copy of the N. T. Tribune, neatly folded. lie was escorted to tbe Eldridge House, in Lawrence, where he addressed the peo ple about an hour. There are now but two parties in Kansas The Republicans and tbe Democrats. The latter are put ting forth every effort to regain their footing. Messrs. Garrard'and Rice, tbe rival can didates for Congress in the Sixth District of Kentucky, who had the late pistol Cfjht at Boooeville, have both wisely re tired from tbe canvass, leatiog their par. ty to Dominate somebody else. President Buchanan has been having a good time recently, attending the Com mencement of the North Carolina Univer sity, down among the Niggers and the Democracy. The Republican nf Ohio have nomina ted Wm. Dennison Jr. for Governor, with a full good ticket. The Lokeys are now coaxing tbe "Straights" to make another nomination. Virginia elects Leteher for Governor by b.UUl), and tbe remainder m the Pern Slate Ticket by a lareer majority. Nine ''Regular" and four irrcpular Democrats, and one American, eleeted to Congress.
