Severe Slorin. The storm cf Friday
afternoon last we l.arn was quite severe in
some quarters. We have heard of bail in
Haines township. Centre conniy, and in the
city of Reading, about 6 o'clock, the bail was
quite destructive. In Milton, we are inform
ed, some trees were supposed to have been
struck by lightning.
In Lewisburg, at tbelliviere House several
bricks were knocked ly lightning from the
cuter corner of the chimney flue nearest ihe
streets. The roof is tinned, and the fluid was
probably scattered from thence, a portion cf
it passing down the water spout at ihe lower
corner on Market street. Leon Welfe, son of
Jonathan Wolfe, was playiog on the walk,
and bad one foot, bare, in the gutter of ihe
stvtit; he was considerably astonished ai see
ing something like fire about him, and on the
foot in water, and was somewhat stunned : the
intsep on one side of that fool was found some
what black and blue, and a blister, as of an
ordinary burn, was discovered : the fool was
put in cold water, when discoloration subsid
ed, and no further injury was felt, it was a
narrow escape, and a singular instance of the
wayward nature of the subtle power.
Oa the same afternoon, a Mr. Hacenboch,
of Centre Twp. Columbia county, had a barn
s'ruck by lightning. It was burned with con
siderable of grain, hay, farming implements,
and a cow, his horses having been removed
in time.
Onr Sabbath Schools.
To witness the zeal put forth by the officers
and teachers of these nurseries of piety in our ;
midst is truly cheering to the christian's and ,
to the patriot's heart. Most of them are as '
punctual ai their posts as tiie -hallowed morn" j
appears. Aad need the Sabbath School be ;
eulogized' Mo! there it stands in all its j
creatne-s and glory, an institution cf God's '
right hand planting. Notwithstanding, how-'
ever, the devcticnal spirit cf the teachers, and ;
the blessed influences arising from their in-;
strumous upon lae morals cf ihe community :
auJ the spirituality of the church, these do not ,
seem snlficient to induce aU our parents and
guardians to place those under their care in !
the Sabbath School; and, consequently, a ram- (
l ie in the groves, or a sail on the rntr, are ;
preferred to this exalted privilege. Take
care! the responsibility resting upon yon, is
great, very great, and the destruction of some i
one may be charged home npon yon. Bring:
out your children, therefore, to the Sabbath
School, that their minds may be imbued with i
ritht principles and divine impressions ; that,
as ihey go cut into the more active scenes of
life, the? mav heJ aroand the rhert in which !
