Wheeler Arrested and
Placed in Jail After New
Trial Appeal Is Denied '
Philadelphia, Deo. 30.—Arrested by
members of District Attorney Ro
| tan's deflective force as lie consulted
with his lawyer yesterday afternoon,
Samuel P, Wheeler, the convicted
embezzler, who lias been a fugitive
from justice since December 24, was
given a short shift to jail after an
ineffectual effort was made to obtain
a new trial for him before Judge
Martin.
Two hours after his apprehension
Wheeler was on his way to
mensing prison, where he is
without bail to awuit the decision of
Judge Martin on an appeal for a rule |
to show cause why the Common
wealth should not grant a rehearing
of the testimony on which he was
convicted.

Dr. Osier, Noted
Surgeon, Is Dead
Oxford. England, Dec. 30. Sir
William Osier, noted physician, who
has been ill for several weeks, died
here last evening.
Nearly fifteen years liu,ve elapsed
since the newspapers of this country
were flooded with reports and com
ments on an address made by Dr.
William Osier in his farewell ad
dress as professor of medicine at
Johns Hopkins University.
It was on Washington s birthday,
1903, that the distinguished man ot
science who was then well advanced
in his fifty-sixth year, told a great
audience at the anniversary exer
cises of-the institution he was about
to leave, "that nothing ,of impor
tance in the world is accomplished
by a man more than forty years
I old."
Y. M. C. A. Gets Program
Ready For Open House
on New Year's Day
Final arrangements were made
for the New Year's clay celebration
at the Y. M. C. A., Second and Locust
streets, when the social committee of
the "Y" met at luncheon to-day.
John F. O'Nell, chairman of the
committee, announced the program,
and submitted it for the approval of
his committee. Ross Swope, chair
man of the decoration committee,
was given a vote of tlianlcs for his
work in decorating Falinestock Hall,
where the various programs will be
put on. •
In the afternoon the poor chil
dren of the city will be entertained
at a vaudeville performance starting
in Fahnestock Hall at 2.30 sharp.
Some of the best acts in the State
have been secured for this program.
Each child in addition will receive
some chocolate to keep him quiet
during the performance.
The evening celebration is to in
clude a reception to the members
and guests of the Y. Si. C. A. and a
program by the several acts which
have been secured, co-operating
with gymnasium classes. The recent
ly formed Spanish class will give a
skit under the direction of the Span
ish teacher, Professor VV. IX Meikel.
Whitaker and Diehl Are
Awarded Big Contract
Whitaker & Diehl, of ttarrisburg,
who, for some years, have been build
ing more bridges than any other
company in the .State, have been
awarded the contract for erecting
the new Bingham street bridge in
lteadipg. , The cost will be 1U99.860.
The successful bidders will HI art
rrork in the near future. They have
I just finished several big jobs for the
State and are ready to ship their
equipment to Reading without de
lay. According to their contract they
agree to build the bridge within 400
working days. Whitaker & Diehl
constructed the Poplar Neck. Mono
cacy and Leeaport bridges and a

Dillsburg Residents
Object to Water Rate
Complaint against the proposed
increase in rates of the Dillsburg
Water Company were entered before ,
the Public Service Commission to
day by K. S. Clark, John K. Cook, A.
H. Basom, Dr. J. 11. Graff and Peter
Sidle, all residents of Dillsburg.
The complainants allege that the
new schedule would bring an in
crease of from 16 2-3 per cent, to
ir.o per cent, in the rates now
charged as flat rates to domestic
consumers and that the metered
rates are increased in some instances
to 200 per cent.
Chairman W. I). Is. Alney, of the
Public Service Commission, sat to
day to hear the testimony in the
, case of the Lancaster, Oxford and
j Southern railroad, which was
| ordered to resume operation of its
, line by the Commission and whose
| only locojiiotive was condemned by
the Federal authorities. The rail-
I road is anxious to go out of business
] and to sell its property. Arrange
ments were made for an immediate
inspection of the engine so that it
can be run until the Commission
formally sanctions abandonment of
the railroad.
Complaints were filed by Waynes
burg and Fast Waynesburg against
the Waynesburg Water Company,
i and by Leechburg against the Kit
taning Telephone Company schedule.
Steps were taken to-day at the
State Department of Health to carry
into effect the orders for all per- I
sons handling preparations contain- i
ing alcohol to file declarations that I
they do not contain wood alcohol. I

Kreisler Receives Big . j
Ovation in Washington
Very recently Fritz Kreisler ap
peared in the National Capitol as solo-"
Ist with the New York Symphony Or
chestra. The occasion was one of the
most brilliant events of the musical
season in Washington, D. C. The pa
tronesses for this concert were of
Washington's most exclusive set, in
cluding Miss Margaret Wilson, daugh
ter of the President, and the wives of
all the cabinet officers.
The concert was considered one of
the most artistic triumphs of both
orchestra and solmst.
It is interesting to note the opinion
of a musical critic whom we know
and one whose word is accepted over
the entire musical world, for John C.
Freund, editor of Musical America,
otherwise known as "Mepliisto" says
of Fritz Kreisler.
"What is the charm of Kreisler?!
who may he said indeed, to stand ab-j
solutely in a class by himself.
"Some would tell you it is his won
derful power as a musician. Others,
his extraordinary dexterity with the
bow. Others will tell you that it is
j the exquisite taste and musicanly
feeling which lie exhibits when he

"For my part, I think one of the
I great reasons for his tremendous
and well-deserved popularity is that
j lie never, under any circumstances,
whatever, forces his instrument for
the sake of some effect. He keeps it
absolutely within its ligitimate scope,
with the result that he develops a
tone of surpassing beauty, and of al
most uncanny musical sweetness and
quality. How many players are there
of whom this can be said? That they
never force their instrument, wheth
er it be a violin, a piano, a 'cello or
even the human voice, for the sake
of making a momentary effect upon
"the groundlings." Indeed, but few.
"That to me is one of Kreisler's

tempt to produce a 'cello tone from
the violin, just as some singers force
the voice so as to produce an aston
ishing volume of tone, which present

I'ottntosn, Pa.. Dec. 30.—Haste cost
the lives of three people last evening
when Mrs. John Letchower, aged 35,
and her two daughters, Helen, aged
4, and Mary, aged 5, were hurled to
death by an express on the Pennsyl
vania Railroad grade crossing at
Kelm street. The three were killed
instantly.
The fatality occurred before the
eyes of the crossing watchman, who
saw the futile rush of the mother and
children to cross ahead of the ex
press. The train was stopped and
the bodies removed to the local sta
tion.
