London, Oct. 16. —There is more
betting than ever on horse racing
throughout England, according to
one of the leading London bookmak
lng firms, as though every event was
trying to make up for the war-time
period when racing as well as bet
ting was suspended.
"It is not only that more people
are betUng," said the head of the
concern, "but they are wagering
larger sums. The small man who
used to have his 'tanner' on a race
now risks his shilling or half crown,
while the clubman who formerly was
content to wager a sovereign now
bets a fiver.
"I have been in business for 3 5
years, and I have never made such
books as this year over the Derby
and other classics.
"Another point about the present
day betting," continued the book
maker, "is the number of women
who back horses. Fifteen years ago
I don't think we had a dozen wom
en customers. Now we have hun
dreds. I don't know where they get
their information, but some of tho
biggest checks we have drawn this
year have been for women.
"They nearly always pay too, when
they lose. Of course, we get an oc
casional defaulter, as we do among
our men customers. But take them
all around they are Just as sporting
over the business as any of the men
we have on our books."

German Officers Apply For
Commissions, but Are
Refused
Berlin, Oct. 15.—The Spanish
embassy in Berlin which is in charge
of American affairs pending the
ratiflcaUon of the Peace Treaty, has
received so many applications from
regular German army officers who
want to serve in the American Army
that it has posted a big sign on the
outer door announcing that such
applications will not be accepted
and that it is useless to apply. The
number of applicants since has
gradually decreased but still there
are some.
Some of those seeking commis
sions In the American Army urged
that they could be of value in
"teaching the Americans how to
fight."
There has been a rush also ot
German officers to Join other for
mer enemy or neutral armies. The
applicants were ready to serve in
either the American, British, Jap
anese, Argentine or even the French
forces.
Every correspondent in Germany,
regardless of his nationality, has
been bombarded with queries and
personal applications. In vain did
they assure the officers that their
armies would under no circum
stances accept German officers. In
vain the explanation was made that
all the Entente armies were over
burdened with officers and were
making every effort to demobilize
them.
Argentina has become more or
less the mecca of the would-be emi
grants from Germany because it has
advertised through its consulate for
agricultural laborers and has offer
ed inducements in the way of free
land. However, those who want most
to leave Germany want least to go to
farming. For those who really want
to take up agriculture the Argen
tina invitation is still attractive.

Missing Boy in an
Effort to Find Him
Hammonton, N. J., Oct. 16.—The
belief that 3-year-old Billy Dansey,
who disappeared from his home here
a week ago, was kidnaped, was
strengthened to-day by the discovj
ery of three different men who de
clared they saw the little fellow
being led away by two strange men
on the day of his disappearance.
Information also was received that
the child was seen in the vicinity of
Egg Harbor, about 10 miles south of
here.
Plans were made to have pictures
of the missing boy thrown on the
screen at motion picture theaters
throughout Pennsylvania and New
Jersey. Arrangements also are
being made for the publication In
many cities of both states of a pe
tition, signed by all the fathers and
mothers in IlammonXon, requesting
his return to his paroits.

Radical Agitators
Lined With Strikers
Gary, Ind., Oct. 16. Army and
city officers continue their search for
radical agitators who have aligned
themselves with the striking steel
workers. Rumors of plots against
the lives of city officials and steel
mill heads gained wide circulation
throughout the city, but the police
and military commander refuesd to
confirm the reports.
Picketing increased and Colonel
W. S. Mapes received reports of at
tempts to intimidate workmen.
The first mass meeting permitted
since the Federal troops entered the
city was held by the strikers yester
day afternoon in a public park and
was addressed by John Fitzpatrick,
of Chicago, chairman of the ra
tional strike committee, and others.

Cleveland, Ohio, Oct. 16.—Secre
tary of War Newton D. Baker, ad
dressing the delegates to the con
vention of the Ohio Federation of
Women's Clubs last night, referring
to the agitation and unrest in this
country since the signing of the ar
mistice, manifesting itself sometimes
in race riots and mob disorder, but
for the most part evidenced by
widespread industrial controversies,
said the administration in Washing
ton is determined that Federal laws
be enforced and Federal agencies
left unobstructed and that Federal
troops will respond instantly to the
call of any governor, to suppress
riots and disorders in any state.

Adoo, son-in-law of the President
