Song Writer Dies of
Torture Inflicted by Robbers
Chicago, Sept. 26.—That W. H.
Purcell, who was found dead in his
apartment on the North Side, last
Monday, died from heart disease
while he was being tortured In an
effort to make him disclose the hid
ing place of a fortune in securities
and cash, was the new theory on
which the police started work yes
terd.v in their effort to clear up the
death of the wealthy song writer
and real estate man.
The hew and startling explanation
of the crime was advanced follow
ing the discovery that $25,000 in
liberty Bonds which Purcell had
secreted in his apartment were
missing. The police believe thieves
learned the hiding place of the
bonds from their victim and were
trying to force further Information
from him when he died of heart
disease.
Making Plans to Prosecute
Boosters of Clothes Prices
Washington, Sept. 26. Reports
of excessive profits by manufacturers
and wholesale dealers of clothing are
being investigated by the Depart
ment of Justice. Attorney General
Palmer said to-day that prosecu
tions would be instituted whenever
justified as soon as Congress passed
the amendments requested by Presi
dent Wilson making the food-control
act applicable to clothing and pro
viding a criminal penalty for hoard
ing and profiteering.
Mr. Palmer will meet a committee
representing the association of State
Attorneys General here October 6
to decide how the law enforcement
agencies of the Federal and State
Governments can co-operate in pun
ishing hoarders and profiteering.
Student Drowns in Lake;
Victim of College Hazers
TTtlca, N. Y., Sept. 25.—Frank Mc-
Cullough, of Kane, Pa., a freshman
at Colgate University at Hamilton,
was drowned in Lake Moraine near
that village, where he had been taken
by a hazing party or sophmores last
night. Versfbns of the fatality differ,
one being that McCullough fell from
a boat while his limbs were bound
by ropes. Another version is that
the student was endeavoring to swim
to the mainland from an island
where the hazers had left him. The
district attorney of Madison county
will conduct an investigation.
The body has not been recovered.
Asked to Give List of
Presents Given to Wilson

lis!, of all presents tendered Presi
dent Wilson through that department
from Kings, Princes or foreign states,
since December 1. 191S, under a
resolution introduced by Rcpiescnta
