from Black sea ports and included
twenty princes, thirty-two princess
! es, twenty former generals in the
j army of the czar and many counts,
I countesses and lesser nobles. The
I jewels they brought with them were
valued at $200,000,000. They had
very little money and Russian
| money is worth very little anyway.
Since arriving in England, these
j Russians have been living off their
j jewels. They declare they had been
! doing this even before leaving home.
The lands and wealth of many of
them had been confiscated by the
Bolsheviki and if it had not been
that, they were able to sell a jewel
occasionally from their secreted
hoard they say they would have
starved.
Diamonds, pearls, rubies, emer
alds and sapphires command higher
prices at present that ever before in
history. This is due to a market
scarcity and to an unprecedented
popularity. Everybody who made
money by the war is buying jewels.

AMAZON VALLEY FOR
COMMERCIAL PURPOSES

of the World War has given a new
impetus to the work of opening up
the great reservoirs of natural
wealth, from gold to fruits and valu
able woods, which lie in the valley
of the Amazon. Several expeditions
of exploration are being organized
here, one of the most important of
Which is under tbo direction of Henry
S. Fleming, of New York. United
States Customs Receiver at Para,
who will shortly start on a three
months trip devoted to exploring the
commercial possibilities of the vast
region watered by the Amazon and,
its maze of tributaries.
The advance guard of another Im
portant expedition of scientists, head
ed by Dr. Hamilton Rice, of Boston,
and his wife, has passed through
here on its way to Manaos which will
bo headquarters of the venture. A
specially equipped 45-foot motor
launch will accomodate the party
which plans to navigate the Rio
Negro to its junction with the Orin
oco In Venezuela.

General Rondon, the well-known
Brazilian explorer who accompanied
Colonel Roosevelt on his famous trip
down the River of Doubt, now named
the Rio Teodoro by the Brazilian
government in honor of the former
American president, has returned
here after spending almost two years
in purveying the wPds of the state
of Matto Grosso on the borders of
Bolivia. The territory explored by
him lies to the southwest of the I'are

The banks of the Amazon are in
undated for three or four months
| each year and are said to afford

| vation of sugar cane, mandloca, rice,
maize, hems and other agricultural
