FRIDAY EVENING, blajrjeusburo TELEGRAPH JUNE 6, 1919
the Rhenish republic and threaten
ing leaders of any such movements
with expulsion, is published in the
Frankfort Gazette.
•The Rhinelanders have been dis
cussing the Interests of their father
land for the last six months without
disturbing public order," the procla
mation says, "but now the German
government threatens them with im
prisonment. They have created a
'mrmrMmrmmmjMjm,
republic -within the German empire
and have sought the right of elec
tion, in which they will have com
plete freedom. There is nothing in
their procedure which might occa
sion protests or strikes, which dis
turb order and economic life."
The French have a propaganda
fund amounting to 10,000,000 francs
with which to further tho movement
wmmmmmmmmmmimmmmmm,
for the Rhenish republic, declares
the Karlsruhe correspondent of the
Lokal Anzelger. This sum, he says,
is being used principally in the
Rhlneland and Palatinate and it is
being partly distributed to those
favorng an independent republic at
I.andau, Mayence, Cologne and
Wiesbaden, who without doubt, he
adds, "have been bribed."
Germans Left Big Stocks of
Wood Behind in Belgium
Washington, June 6.—The discov
ery that the Germans abandoned
considerable stocks of wood in their
hasty retreat from Belgium, has
made valueless the estimate of the
present lumber needs of that coun
try and a new estimate is now being
made. Ae report of after-war con
ditions has just been issued by the
Comito Central Industriel de Belgi
que, the unofficial organization of
the Belgian government, which was
charged with the collection of in
formation regarding the destruction
of property in Belgium by actual
warfare or with the deliberate in
tention of crippling the country's
industries
Except for the loss of numerous
wood-working machines, the lumber
and furniture manufacturing situa
tion in Belgium is not so bad as is
that in the steel, metal-working,
chemical and some other industries
A serious consequence of the war ts,
however, the loss of stocks of dried
and seasoned lumber, the replacing
of which in equivalent quantities,
will require considerable time.
