the successful prosecution of the

This statement by a member of
the Brotherhood of America's grand
circle of Pennsylvania summarizes 4
the attitude of the order on the
world war. The convention of the
grand circle of Pennsylvania is now
held in Cameron Hall here.
The session opened this morning
with an address of welcome by
Mayor Daniel L. Keister, in which
lie extended a warm welcome to the
city for the members of the fraternal
organization. Joh%. Ruhl, Philadeß
pnia, supreme secretary, replied to
tne address of welcome, and the
convention went into executive ses
sion.

Red Cross Festival to
Be Held at Riverside
A festival to raise funds for the
establishment of a Red Cross Chap
ter at Riverside will be held Friday
evening on the lawn of the Harrls
burg Academy, It was announced.
The festival will include booths,
fish ponds and fortune teller's tent,
i There will be a delicatessen booth,
• and soft drinks and Ice cream may
be purchased all evening.

munity singing during the evening.

Tax on Professions
Proposed in House

Washington, Aug. 13. Special
taxes of ten dollars a year on occu
pation or profession, except the war
industry trades, farmers, teachers
and ministers of the gospel, were
written into the $8,000,000,000 war
revenue •'bill to-day by the House
Ways and Means Committee. A sim
ilar tax was placed upon any busi
ness with receipts of $2,000 a year i
or more, with a levy of $25 a year
on wholesale houses with receipts of
$200,000 or more.
FEAST OF ASSUMPTION'
The Feast of the Assumption of
the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven
will be observed In dhe Roman
Catholic Church, on Thursday. In the
Cathedral mass -will be offered at
5.30, 7 and 9 o'clock. In St. Frances'
Church, there will be mass at 5.30
and 8 o'clock. To-morrow will be the
Vigil of the' Assumption.
