Waited For Jitngy Until
One Raced Past Him
Dinner pail in hand, he stood at j
the intersection of Sixth and Ver-j
beke streets this morning shortly
after 6 o'clock waiting. While three
southbound trolley cars spel by he
moved not nor looked elsewhere ex
ropt northward Another of the cor
poration's carriers passed, filled to
capacity and then some. But he
gaztd not their way. The hour hand
of the clock in the Plack Jewelry
store further up the street moved
around toward 7 o'clock. Another
car hurried along. Still the man
with the pail only grasped the handle
more tightly and kept his eyes up
Sixth street. Then the big whistle
shrieked out 10 minutes of the start
ing hour at the railroad shops. The!
waiter looked at his watch, then he i
looked again up Sixth street. It
was no bigger than a man's hand as I
it loomed in the distance, but he ;
saw it and took courage. It grew!
nearer. He threw away the over-1
used cigar he had chewed on des-1
perateiy in his watch for that which !
now drew near, stepped out beyond i
the curb, held up his hand only to
see a crowded auto race by.
"What the hell," he swore as he
stepped back.
"Mister yo uwaitln' for a Jitney"
a boy asked him.
"You bet I am," he snapped back
savagely. "Well, there ain't no such
thing. Don't you read the papers?"
Then it dawned on the workman
that he hadn't read the news of the
Public Service Commission's action
and he sadly boarded a Harrisburg
Railways ca rfor his work, 40 min
utes late, but not having given up,
by gum, until there was no other
way left.

BRIDGES FOUND
UNSAFEON ROADS
State Officials Will Have Im
mediate Repairs Made; More
Money Fdr Emergencies
Highway Commissioner J. Denny
O'Nell has Just finished an Inspec
tion of "war" roads throughout the
state In company with Lieutenant
Governor Frank B. McClaln, who is
In charge of expenditures for war
road purposes, for the Pennsylvania
Council of National Defense. All sec
tions of main roads, necessary for
the rapid and safe transportation of
army truck trains, were given minute
attention. All bridges along these
roads were inspected carefully and
a number were found to be unsafe
for public travel.
A statement issued from the de
partment says: "Upon the advice of
Lieutenant Governor McClaln, the
Pennsylvania Council of National
Defense has made additional appro
priations of $25,000 each, for use in
improving bad stretches of road lo
cated in Osborne borough, Allegheny
county, and in Economy township,
Beaver county. Both sections of
roadway lio on the direct route, used
by government truck trains, and are
almqpt impassable. Neither section
of road is on a state route, conse
quently, the State Highway Depart
ment is unable to expend money for
their improvement, which was spe
cifically appropriated for use on
state highways. Neither Osborne
borough or Economy township is able
to aid in financing the project, as
each municipality is up to its limit
of indebtedness, so that the only way
to expedite the improvement of both
sections of roadway was by an ap
propriation by the Pennsylvania
Council of National Defense, which,
as noted above, has granted an ap
propriation for use in both places.
Last winter the Pennsylvania Council
of National Defense appropriated half
a million dollars for use in improv
ing main routes through the state,
essential to aid the country in its
war program.
"In Westmoreland county. Commis
sioner O'Nell found that the long
bridge, on the Lincoln highway, is in
dangerous condition. This bridge is
absolutely necessary for rapid trans
state travel by government trucks.
Through an agreement with the Com
missioners of Westmoreland county,
forces of the State Highway Depart
ment to-day were started to work to
make the necessary repairs, under
the direction of Willis Whited, Bridge
Engineer, and J. E. Sampson, Super
intendent of the State Highway De
partment. The Westmoreland County
Commissioners have agreed to pay the
expenses involved.
"In Beaver county, the Legionviile
bridge, also on the Lincoln highway,
was found to be in exceedingly bad
condition, and unless the county au
thorities make the necessary repairs,
the State Highway Department wttl
make them, and charge the cost to
the Beaver county authorities."
